Fundamentals of Construction Project Delivery Systems advocates for a transformative approach that places emphasis on integrated methodologies such as design-build and integrated project delivery. Unlike conventional perspectives that view project delivery as a mere administrative process and a set of rules/features, this book challenges this notion. Here, the owner is envisioned as actively adjusting the degree of organizational integration and interest alignment responding to the given internal and external context. Divided into four parts, this book begins by introducing project delivery systems before covering selection methods and contract types in Part 2. The third section goes into detail on four delivery project methods: Design-Bid-Build, CM-at-Risk, Design-Build, and Integrated Project Delivery and follows a similar chapter structure with a case study to demonstrate the method. The final part looks to the future covering new procurement trends, innovation, culture, and efficiency.
This book offers practical guidance on how owners can effectively leverage integrated approaches to enhance project outcomes. For educational purposes, this book offers guidance for undergraduate and graduate students in project delivery method courses within construction management programs.
Yong-Woo Kim is a full Professor and P. D. Koon Endowed Professorship holder at the University of Washington, and a Visiting Professor at Ewha Womens University. Dr. Kim’s main research interests include project-based production management, lean construction, supply chain management, and integrated project delivery systems. Over the last 25 years, he has offered teaching and training on the project delivery system, project management, and lean construction – not only in the classroom but also to industry professionals.
