Alkali-activated Concrete (AAC) is a potential substitute for traditional Portland cement concrete. However, uncertainties regarding its chemistry and a lack of information on long-term practical performance restrict it to precast applications. Several studies have addressed the chemistry and mechanical properties of AAC. So, this book emphasizes the long-term characterization of AAC, especially under the following categories: High-temperature exposure; Drying shrinkage; and Environmental impact assessment. The performance of AAC under each of these categories is significantly enhanced, compared to traditional Portland cement. With the recent need for sustainable construction and the increasing number of standards for AAC, it can soon find wider practical usage as a partial or complete substitute for Portland cement. This book compiles the relevant findings on AAC in the long term to showcase its advantages over traditional Portland cement. Given the uncertainties associated with the chemistry, the challenges, practical recommendations, and future scope of research are also highlighted.

Dr Pujitha Ganapathi C. holds a PhD in Civil Engineering. She is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati, India. Her research interests include mechanical and microstructural characterization of alkali-activated concrete and cementitious systems; durability; drying shrinkage; life cycle and cost assessments; and fiber-reinforced concrete. Prof Indrajit Ray holds a PhD in Civil Engineering and has served as Program Coordinator and Professor of Construction Management at the University of the West Indies, St Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. He has also held faculty positions at Purdue University Northwest, Purdue Fort Wayne, and West Virginia University, all USA. Dr Ray has published over 125 articles, advised more than 30 graduate students, and received four teaching awards.Prof Arkamitra Kar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, at Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, Telangana, India. His research interests are the characterizations of alternative construction materials and durability studies of concrete prepared with such materials. Prof Kar is an alumnus of West Virginia University (WVU), from where he obtained both his MS (2010) and PhD (2013) in Civil Engineering with a perfect GPA of 4.0.
