The book follows more than thirty grassroots Syrian women leaders in the process of collective learning and organizing while in exile in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. It presents the pedagogical approach developed by Syrian activists. The approach, centred around the lived experience of those involved, facilitates space for building networks of mutual support and community engagement. Based on ethnographic research conducted since 2018, the author, along with the participants of these activities, explores various forms of everyday politics these women community organizers practice as they navigate and transform power dynamics in their personal lives, homes, and local communities.
By presenting a detailed illustration of the grassroots approach to supporting refugee women, the book serves as a valuable resource for researchers, practitioners, and activists who question top-down methods in both humanitarian and development projects, seeking possibilities of transnational feminist solidarity and solutions directly from the people on the ground. It will be of interest to researchers in gender studies, diaspora studies, politics and international relations, and sociology of migration.

Inga Hajdarowicz is a researcher and activist with a PhD in Sociology. She has explored participatory democracy, grassroots organizing, feminisms, and critical border studies, primarily in Poland, Colombia, Greece, and Lebanon. She is Co-coordinator of Researchers on the Border, a network in response to the irregularized migration at the Polish-Belarusian border.
