An alternative reference to the countries of our planet
The World Guide 2005/2006 CD-ROM is a fully searchable reference guide to the countries of the world. Drawing on United Nations and other mainstream data, it includes all the facts, history, political and economic analysis you would find in a conventional reference guide, but in addition offers information on issues central to the lives of people in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean. Key features include: THEMES - more than 20 new reports on current global issues, such as anti-globalization movements, media, GM foods, human rights, oil, the arms trade and HIV/AIDS. COUNTRIES - Updated information on over 240 countries, including East Timor, West Papua and Somalia. For each country there is a historical overview, profile, key statistical indicators, location map, country map, slide-show of photographs, flag and national anthem. INDICATORS - A searchable database with a set of statistics for each country on a range of issues including demography, health, education, economy, energy, communications, food, land use and public expenditure. This data can also be accessed via an interactive world map.
The CD also includes the latest Amnesty International Reports on human rights in more than 150 countries and hundreds of Social Watch Reports showing how countries measure up in terms of key development targets. The World Guide is written and produced by the Third World Institute in Uruguay. As a reference, it is unique in providing a view of the world 'from the south'.
