PULLING DOWN THE PILLAR OF PRIDE
Pride is one of the major spirit Satan plants in a life to destroy it. Pride makes you think you have arrived. A man of God once said, “I have a spiritual father that tutelage me for fifteen years. I went and form my church in my country. By then, charismatic churches are not many as it is today. I got calls to preach in Europe, Asia, African countries and America. I was loved, I thought I have arrived. I became proud and arrogant, even, to my spiritual father. I look down on him. Yes, I have arrived.
Any time he phoned me, I won’t pick the call. I won’t answer him. I will say, “This old man, have started again”. “This man belongs to old school”. The pride was so much. One day, he called me and I picked the phone. I suspect he needs money, so I went with enough cash of thousand dollars.
I got there, and he sat me down. He said, he doesn’t have much to say, but it was a vision he saw and he wants us to discuss it. I thank him and told him to say it. He said, I should be careful as he doesn’t know where the arrow is coming from; but he saw me fell from a high mountain with bruises all over me. As if it was not enough, before I landed down, down, the mountain a very deep cloud covered me. I shouted for help but no one came, but a man in white garment came and rescued me, when I nearly lost hope. I said within me, “This must be Jesus; I am save”.
After the narration, I ask, “Is that all?” He said, “Yes, my son”. I brought out my wallet, brought out money and offered him five thousand dollars. I said “Thank you sir, take this for your effort”. He rejected it and say; “I am okay my son.” I told him, he would have told me these entire on phone, instead of me coming all the way to Nigeria. He said, “I am sorry. Don’t blame me much. I called severally but you didn’t pick my call my son.” I said, “Oh, I am always busy this day.” Pride and arrogance after counsel
Finally, I said, I don’t know you call me for a trivial thing like this. I will see to it. I know what to do” Another bullet of arrogance in my mouth! He said I should knee down for prayer. I ignored him; I said I want to catch my flight, in an hour time. He said, “Well, I remove my hands. Thank you”. I said, “Bye sir!” and I left.
Not quite, two weeks later, problems came calling, challenges here and there. Headaches come all over me. I prayed and fasted, the heaven was sealed against me. Members in the church reduced drastically until over 3000 members turned to hundred. At this point I know something was happening. I went to an elderly man of God who I knew years back before I went into ministry.
I narrated everything to him and told him to pray for me. He told me straight in the face and said, “In three days’ time I will see you.” The third day, I rushed to him and he told me straight what I least expected. He said, I matched my toes on a man of God, that is dear to God and I should go to my spiritual father, to pray for me. I reasoned deep and said, “I know where the problem comes from. I will pick ticket and take next flight to Nigeria. I got to my spiritual father’s office unannounced. He welcomed me and asked if all was well. I said, “All is not well sir, please, forgive me”. He said I didn’t offend him. He said what he saw baffled him, the reason, he sent for me the other day. In summary, he prayed for me, anointed me and prophesied to my life. I pick my pieces and left. Shortly after then, things changed for good dramatically. My members came back and I keep rising! Praise the Lord.
The lesson is, do away with pride. When you grow in life, don’t abuse it. God can pick you from the dust bin and promote you to the palace. He can turn you from a mere Shepherd boy to be a king. David was never proud, but gave prises to God until he occupied the palace. Yet, he kept his position well with God.
Pride makes you overvalue yourself and undervalue people and things around you. This is what God hates.
“These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
In the list of seven things that God hates, pride is the first, because it is at the bottom of much sin and gives rise to it. Satan knows this; he strives hard to build it in our heart. Just little achievement, it stuck in the head. The pillar of destruction is built to pull us down.
When we look at the man of God in the early narratives, he lacked humility; he was proud and Satan used it against him. The book of 1 Peter 5:5-6 warned us against it.
“Likewise, you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.”
Pride is bad. The book of Luke 14:11 says,
“For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Pride humiliates while humility exalts a man. Satan wants us to trade in pride, so that we might be destroyed.
Pride makes victim fall repeatedly in shame. The man of God is lucky to quickly know his weakness. He would be down thinking he is tall. Satan fell, thinking he is still in charge. He claims ownership of the world he never created. He boasts even before Jesus. “I will give you this world if you bow down before me”. A failed child claims Lordship over what he doesn’t have. Pride goes before a fall. A proud man talks of social status anywhere he goes. A proud man talks his intellectual attainment even when not asked or interested. He talks and is proud of his achievement, riches, family and takes all glory away from God. Satan allow this because it is a weapon he uses to destroy us. Pride is one pillar, he cherishes to destroy destiny.
Whatever you earn, give glory to God, don’t arrogate anything to yourself. Naked you come, naked you shall go. Goliath arrogated power and victory to self but failed. The poor, short, unknown young boy of David brought him down. Satan knew he boast of his stature. That you are fat doesn’t mean you will beat everyone that comes your way. That you are brilliant in class doesn’t mean you will be the best in years to come among your mates. The better watered and green fields did not make Mr Lot possess more than Abraham, when each went his way. If not for Abraham, Lot would have been captured and enslaved!
Pride promotes division in the body of Christ, at home, among friends and with neighbours. Pride blinds people that are proud. Pride will make you dig your grave and fall into it. Pride is a killer. Pride deadens our heart and mind to truth. Pride provokes us to usurp the rightful place of others which creates strife and decision. Pride resides in the heart and defiles the soul from prospering. Pride will not allow you model yourself to Jesus as servant not a master. Pride demotes and destroy destiny. Satan sowed the seed of arrogance and pride not humility. He fell as a result of pride and wants everyone to follow same way. He arrogates power, influence and pride to himself.
The book of Isaiah 14:12-15 says it all.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit”.
Satan fell as a result of pride and was crowned with shame.
Prophet Elijah was not left out. He arrogates righteousness to himself. He complained to God, in 1king 19:10.
“He replied, “I have been very zealous for the LORD God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”
God replied him in verse 18,
“Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel—all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.”
Elijah classified himself righteous while God told him off. Let God be the Judge, not you!
Pride is dangerous; it leads to untimely death as the book of Isaiah said.
“But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.” Isaiah 14:15.
Pride is followed by scorn and ridicule you hardly see who helps you out
“A man’s pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honour” Proverbs 29:23.
In the journey of life, don’t push people away as a result of pride; I know it all. Pride will isolate you from others. No wonder, Satan uses it to pull us down.
Pride prevents growth. The young man was lucky to quickly come to his senses by going back to his spiritual father, if not he would have been stagnated. Pride gave him sense of fake accomplishment waiting to consume him. But, he traced his step back fast. He listened to reasons,...
