The Santa Claus Chronicles offer a view of Life based on simple Logic. Logic is the 'formal' expression of common sense. It is part of Mathematics. Mathematics, as you know, also spreads into uncommon sense, Differential Equations for example, which we happily leave to the Mathematicians. But everyone knows about counting, and the universally famous Counting Numbers, also called the Natural Numbers-1,2,3, . . . and so on, onward to as large a Number as you like. Numbers are the first expression of Logic in our conscious human brains. We use the word intuitive to explain where they come from. One mathematician thought God programmed our brains with them when he created the first human brain. So what does Santa Claus have to do with Counting Numbers? As you know, there are a lot of them, more than anyone can ever count. Because wherever you stop counting, the next Number is always bigger, bigger by 1, thus new and different, or old and different, take your pick. Santa's thing is giving Gifts, right? And where did the idea of Santa Claus and Gifts originate? From an old Story in an old book. It is the Oldest Book if you define the word 'book' in a certain common-sense way. The Santa Claus Chronicles are small books intended to take a new look at the Old Story, from the perspective of Counting. As it happens, the Old Story is a Love Story. About how Love started out easy and then became difficult, confused, and complicated with something vastly different from Love, something opposed to Love, like Love backwards: Evol. We usually spell it E-v-i-l. The story is large in scope: it covers the time span of our entire Universe. It begins with the beginning of the Universe and ends with the end of it. The beginning is called Genesis, which means 'beginning,' and the end is called Revelation, because the end of the Universe hasn't happened yet;

Sam Deacon is a former teacher of Mathematics, from 7th grade to Graduate School levels. His main interest is in Number Theory. At the dawn of the Computer Age he taught himself various programming languages and after working as a programmer for several months, he began to design and build computer software applications. He worked as an independent Software Systems Consultant, providing custom software systems for several years before establishing his own company and developing software products for applications in Healthcare.
The Santa Claus Chronicles offer a view of Life based on simple Logic. Logic is the "e;formal"e; expression of common sense. It is part of Mathematics. Mathematics, as you know, also spreads into uncommon sense, Differential Equations for example, which we happily leave to the Mathematicians. But everyone knows about counting, and the universally famous Counting Numbers, also called the Natural Numbers-1,2,3, . . . and so on, onward to as large a Number as you like. Numbers are the first expression of Logic in our conscious human brains. We use the word intuitive to explain where they come from. One mathematician thought God programmed our brains with them when he created the first human brain. So what does Santa Claus have to do with Counting Numbers? As you know, there are a lot of them, more than anyone can ever count. Because wherever you stop counting, the next Number is always bigger, bigger by 1, thus new and different, or old and different, take your pick. Santa's thing is giving Gifts, right? And where did the idea of Santa Claus and Gifts originate? From an old Story in an old book. It is the Oldest Book if you define the word "e;book"e; in a certain common-sense way. The Santa Claus Chronicles are small books intended to take a new look at the Old Story, from the perspective of Counting. As it happens, the Old Story is a Love Story. About how Love started out easy and then became difficult, confused, and complicated with something vastly different from Love, something opposed to Love, like Love backwards: Evol. We usually spell it E-v-i-l. The story is large in scope: it covers the time span of our entire Universe. It begins with the beginning of the Universe and ends with the end of it. The beginning is called Genesis, which means "e;beginning,"e; and the end is called Revelation, because the end of the Universe hasn't happened yet; otherwise, you wouldn't be reading this. So, because we don't exactly know what will happen in the future, no one knows how the Story ends yet. The idea of the Revelation part of the book seems to have been to give out some strangely coded clues as to what the end of the Universe might be like. Through dreams, or visions. Reportedly inspired by the Maker of Time and Everything Else. A lot of it sounds very strange, to be sure. Partly because it was written two thousand years ago from symbolic dreams of fierce beasts and so on. And notice how we are counting, counting Time. Time is always counting, tick, tock. Two Thousand, 2,000 is the approximate Number. Years, that is. How many days? A little more than 730,500, figuring for leap years and other small corrections. How many tick-tock cycles (seconds)? A little more than 63,115,200,000. The Santa Claus Chronicles views this story, from the standpoint of an imaginary Universe, parallel to and outside Earth's universe. What do we mean by "e;parallel to and outside"e;? Read on and see. North Pole Universe we style as the home Universe of Santa Claus himself. It is outside of Time, which is one of the dimensions our Universe runs on (ask Albert Einstein). Life in Earth Universe is Life in Time. Not in the North Pole Universe though, no tick-tocks there. How could Santa Claus get around the entire world with his gifts in one night? In Time? Obviously, he could not. So why not take a closer look at Time?

North Pole Universe

In The Santa Claus Chronicles, we are interested in seeing what Life might be like on a Planet in the Santa Claus Universe, which we call North Pole Universe. NP stands for “North Pole,” in harmony with the Frosty theme of these Chronicles. NP could also stand for “New Parallel” as you will later see, because NPU (North Pole Universe) is a Universe very much like our 3D+T Space Time Universe, but outside our Earth Universe, and parallel to it. And it is very “close by” (could be 8 inches away, or less) but completely separate because it is parallel to it.

“How can this be?”

I know, if “The Universe” is the only Universe, which is supposed to contain everything, how can there be anything else anywhere else? And 8 inches away? Let’s investigate.

First, it’s a question of terminology, “The Universe,” which can lead to confusion on simply linguistic grounds. And on scientific grounds too because by definition, Science consists of everything we can see, or sense in some way. But Science is not the Queen of all Knowledge. You know what Knowledge is: all the stuff stored in your Mind, which in turn lives in your physical Brain, located at the very top of your Body, in the top of your head right under your hair, or lack of it. No, someone else holds that regal title: it is Her Majesty, Mathematics. Which in these Chronicles, you will remember, boils down to Counting. Counting is easy, so read bravely on and travel with us through the Chronicles of North Pole Universe. Only a little training and orientation of your Imagination is required because Imagination is the very air You will breathe on New Planet in North Pole Universe, because there isn’t any other air there.

“Oh No!!”

It’s okay, you won’t need to breathe there!

Science is about things we humans can observe with our handy five senses. You know what they are: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch; SSSTT if you prefer abbreviation. All three S’s and the first T are conveniently mounted on the human head, close to the brain that receives and interprets their signals, such as “Someone is baking cookies!” The last T is present all over the exterior of the human body and a lot of the interior as well. That’s Physics, Chemistry and Biology—Science about stuff inside and outside our bodies. Science has done a great job of amassing Knowledge in this physical arena we live in. But as you know, Mathematics (Counting) is the Queen of the Sciences, as well as all other Knowledge. “Math? Yuck. Not a Nice Queen!” someone out there just said. Quite a few of you, I’m afraid. But don’t stop reading yet. We can all count. You’ve been doing it since before you were two years old. One, Two, Three  …  all the way to 10, even back then. And most of you can count to remarkably high numbers. Some of you even like math. Just remember this: All of Mathematics, which means all of Science, and all of Human Logic, is based on Counting. The Counting Numbers, often called the “Natural Numbers,” all of them, are at the very core of human knowledge itself. This means that Knowledge is Counting and Numbers, and where we take Numbers. Looking at Life and Existence, you could say no part of Knowledge is any more difficult, if you boil it down, than counting the Natural Numbers. Except maybe Psychology. Even there, what are you supposed to do when you’re angry? Yep, count to 10. Unbelievable. But wait for it.

The idea of another Universe, a completely separate and Parallel Universe, namely NPU (North Pole Universe) may seem strange to you. You may ask “How do you know such a thing even exists?” To this we reply by asking you a question, “What kind of Knowledge do you mean by know?” If your answer is “I require Scientific Knowledge,” the reply is “Forget about it then. It is impossible to know scientifically.” And how do we know it is impossible to know scientifically? Answer: By the very definition of Science: “The five fizz-ick-al senses.” But we do know One, Two, Three and Four exist, instinctively, because they are Numbers, Natural ones. If we know One, we know an Other “one”, a Next, either of which makes Two, and you can see we are suddenly counting. This is the basis of human Logic, and you only have to be able to count to Two to set it all up. You’ll see how easily it is done later on in the Chronicles. So how do we know North Pole Universe is separate from Earth Universe? Because it is Other, it is parallel to it. # Two. Please allow us to explain.

You do know about parallel lines; they are something like perfectly straight railroad tracks, they never cross each other at any point. Bad luck for the Train and everyone on it if they deviate from being one single fixed distance apart, as far as the train goes. By the way, how many counting numbers are there? You will probably answer pretty quickly because you are an experienced counter, indeed, we will go so far as to say you are an expert at counting, as expert as anyone else in any case, assuming you have finished say, Sixth Grade and also because you are a reader of the Santa Claus Chronicles, all of which, without exception, are highly intelligent. I’m sure I heard someone answer, “Well there have to be Infinitely many, because no matter how large a Number you propose as the exact number of Numbers, I can immediately show you a larger one by simply counting to the next number, which must be larger! See?” Yes! And congratulations to you! You have just made an important Mathematical Argument, maybe the most important; you have proved there are Infinitely many Numbers. And you did it by simply counting, at which you are expert if you will kindly permit a reiteration, which we do here all the Time. You have proved Infinity exists, in a particular way, though no one can ever succeed in counting all the way to Infinity. See what we mean about SC Chronicles readers? Everyone is Awesome! So now we can extend our discussion of parallel lines and railroad tracks to Infinitely long ones, never-ending ones. Since we can never actually count to Infinity, it is only in our Imagination we can go there. As you already know, The Santa Claus Chronicles require Imagination. What did you expect from such a title?

An Infinitely long straight Line is a line that never ends, in either direction. If you mark it off in equal finite sections and decide to count all the sections before you eat your next meal, you will never stop counting and won’t be able to eat or do anything else for the rest of your entire life, which happens to be of finite duration and won’t last very long anyway. Which brings up the subject of Death, which we will drop for now. This Infinitely long Line we are talking about is a Universe with just one dimension, using terms from the Geometry part of mathematics you are familiar with. Finite means “it ends for sure.” The twin and logically opposite concepts of Finite and Infinite are a key to the SC Chronicles. Infinite = Not Finite, Finite = Not Infinite.

Hopefully you were taught early on what “No” and “Not” mean. In our house we learned at a very early age and quickly, what “No” definitely did not mean. Which was anything along the lines of “No, mmm, well, maybe” or “Maybe not?” Our mother’s directives were not suggestions. She graduated college with a degree in English and therefore officially knew the meaning of the word “No.” And never failed to enforce it. In any case, even if we thought she was somehow mistaken about the dictionary meaning of no, we learned it was best for our happiness to accept her version of the English Dictionary. Because she was also expert in ways to make us not happy. Her motto was “My Way is the Happy Way; any other Way will make you Unhappy and I will see to it by Gum.” She often swore upon Gum, I’m not sure why. Nor why she liked to make her gum pop and crack loudly when she chewed it. I guess it was a generational thing. The general context smacked of surety and predictability, cause and effect.

Though the mere mention of the word math or mathematics may create a little frisson of fear or distaste in the minds of some, here in the SC Chronicles, Math mostly means simple Arithmetic, which also comes down to counting; even two-year olds can do it, right? If you can count, you can understand the Santa Claus Chronicles. We might say, if you are old enough to count and old enough to read, and old enough (and young enough) to believe in Santa Claus, you can perfectly understand the Santa Claus Chronicles. The goal of this First Book of The Santa Claus Chronicles is to set up a few very basic and simple Ideas in your Mind, in your Imagination, to prepare...
