Part I: The Origin and Heritage of Hermes

Chapter 1: Wisdom of the Ancient World Background

1.1 Ancient Egyptian Wisdom and the Archetype of Thoth

In the ancient Egyptian civilization, a rich, mysterious, and glorious civilization, Thoth (Djehuty in Egyptian) stands as a brilliant star, a great symbol of wisdom and writing. He holds a crucial position in the ancient Egyptians' beliefs and culture. He frequently appears in unique images in murals, sculptures, and other works of art. One depicts him as a human with the head of an ibis, its raised head and piercing eyes seeming to embody boundless wisdom; another depicts him as a baboon. Both images are closely associated with the sacred and order in ancient Egyptian culture. The ibis was considered a sacred bird, its graceful posture and unique habits imbued with divine meaning; the baboon, with its cleverness and orderly behavior, was also seen as a symbol of divine order. In the profound Egyptian cosmology, Thoth was more than just an inventor of culture; he shouldered a far greater mission: a staunch defender of the order of heaven and earth, a faithful guardian of Ma'at (truth and order). "Maat" represents the truth, justice and order in the universe. Thoth protects this core value with his wisdom and power, ensuring that all things in the world can operate in accordance with the established rules.

The Divine Role of Thoth

  • Thoth, the scribe of the universe, was reverently regarded by the ancient Egyptians as the god's faithful recorder of events. Like a meticulous historian, he recorded all events. In the mysterious "Judgment of the Underworld" scenes imagined by the ancient Egyptians, Thoth stood solemnly beside the scales, intently recording the weight of the deceased's soul. This weight was crucial, determining the soul's ultimate fate. If the soul's weight matched the feather representing truth and order, the deceased's soul would rest in peace; otherwise, it would face a different fate. Thoth's record was impartial and unbiased, like the laws of the universe, which could not be violated.
  • Inventor of Writing and Knowledge: The Egyptians reverently attribute the invention of hieroglyphics to Thoth. Hieroglyphics are a key symbol of ancient Egyptian civilization. It served not only as a means of recording information but also as a crucial vehicle for the ancient Egyptians to express their thoughts and pass on their culture. Thoth endowed humanity with the ability to record, enabling the ancient Egyptians to preserve their history, mythology, religion, and other knowledge in written form. This remarkable contribution also made him the source of "writing theology," which emphasizes the sacredness and authority of writing, believing that writing possesses the special power to communicate with the gods and convey divine will.
  • God of Time and the Moon: Thoth possessed a close and special connection with the moon. The ancient Egyptians' observation and understanding of natural phenomena revealed a mysterious rhythm in the waxing and waning of the moon. With his wisdom, Thoth used the waxing and waning of the moon to mark time, inventing the calendar and the concepts of rhythm. The calendar enabled the ancient Egyptians to better plan agricultural production, religious ceremonies, and other activities, while the concept of rhythm gave them a deeper understanding of the passage of time. The moon also symbolized mystery and change in ancient Egyptian culture. As the god of time and the moon, Thoth controlled the mysteries of time's flow and transformation.
  • Patron of Magic and Medicine: Thoth was highly revered in the fields of magic and medicine in ancient Egypt. Many magical spells were devoutly inscribed in his name, believed to be more effective through the power of Thoth. He was considered a spiritual mentor to physicians, priests, and astrologers. Doctors would invoke Thoth's protection in their treatment, hoping for the wisdom and power to heal illnesses. Priests, in their religious rituals, would follow Thoth's example, pursuing divine knowledge and spiritual enlightenment. Astrologers relied on Thoth's wisdom to interpret the stars and predict future fortunes.

Thoth’s “Intermediary” Qualities

Within the vast landscape of ancient Egyptian mythology, Thoth occupies a unique and crucial position. He is not merely a symbol of wisdom; behind this radiant image lies the crucial role of mediator between gods and humans, between order and chaos. He is like an invisible yet steadfast bridge, spanning the seemingly distant and opposing realms of gods and humans, order and chaos.

Throughout the rich tapestry of myth, Thoth frequently appears in scenes of conflict among the gods. Whenever fierce disputes arise among the gods over power, interests, or ideals, Thoth always steps forward. Unlike other gods, he doesn't resort to overwhelming divine power to suppress conflicts. Instead, he relies on his exceptional linguistic abilities and profound wisdom. He patiently listens to the gods' demands and perspectives, then uses gentle yet persuasive language to analyze the underlying issues and find mutually acceptable solutions. Through his efforts, once-tense conflicts are gradually resolved, and harmony is restored among the gods.

It's worth noting that Thoth's role bears striking resemblance to the later Greek god Hermes. Both are considered gods of communication, carrying the crucial mission of transmitting information and facilitating exchange within their respective mythological systems. Whether it's important messages between gods or divine will conveyed to humanity, they are able to convey them with unerring accuracy. They are also gods who transcend boundaries, able to move freely between realms and worlds, breaking down all restrictions and barriers. This similarity is more than just a coincidence; it reflects the shared understanding and emphasis placed on communication, transmission, and transcending boundaries in mythological creation across different cultures.

The Fusion of Thoth and Hermes

Throughout the long and turbulent course of history, when the curious and adventurous Greeks, bringing their unique culture and philosophies, unexpectedly encountered the ancient and mysterious Egyptian civilization in the bustling and diverse city of Alexandria, this encounter was like the fierce collision of two brilliant stars in the vast universe, instantly unleashing a unique and dazzling fusion of energy. As a major center of trade and cultural exchange at the time, Alexandria was a vast cultural melting pot where diverse ideas and beliefs intertwined and influenced each other. In this vibrant arena of diverse cultures, Thoth and Hermes were viewed by wise men as two distinct yet interrelated aspects of the same deity. In the mysterious and profound Egyptian mythology, Thoth is the undisputed god of writing and wisdom. He oversaw the creation of writing and the precious transmission of knowledge, like an enigmatic guardian of knowledge, quietly and carefully concealing profound wisdom within ancient, yellowed scrolls. The writing he created, like a magical code, unlocked the door to the advancement of human civilization, allowing knowledge to transcend time and space and be passed down from generation to generation. In the romantic and imaginative world of Greek mythology, Hermes is the god of language and communication. Possessing nimble hands and a nimble mind, he effortlessly shuttled between gods and humans, tirelessly conveying vital messages. Like a nimble messenger, he bridged the gap between realms, enabling mutual understanding and communication between gods and humans. Both possessed the astonishing power of "crossing boundaries." Thoth transcended the boundaries between mortals and knowledge, allowing mortals to access the profound wisdom of the universe; Hermes transcended the boundaries between gods and humans, building a vital bridge of communication between them. Thus, amidst this passionate and profound cultural fusion, the prototype of Hermes Trismegistus (the Triple Great One) emerged, like a seed long nurtured in the cultural soil, finally breaking through. This archetype is a unique and precious cultural crystallization. It carries the profound Egyptian theology, a belief system imbued with mystery and woven through the ages, imbued with a unique understanding and reverence for the universe, life, and the gods. It also embodies the brilliance of Greek philosophical speculation, whose profound reflections on the nature of the world and human existence are vividly demonstrated in this composite symbol. The Greek philosophers' exploration of the origins of the world and the value and meaning of humanity collided and merged with the mystical teachings of Egyptian theology, imbuing the "Hermes Trismegistus" archetype with even richer and deeper connotations.

Summary

The image of Thoth carries rich and profound connotations. He is the "scribe who records the order of the universe," a meticulous and dedicated recorder who meticulously records all the laws and rules of the universe, allowing future generations to explore the mysteries of the universe through these precious records. In ancient Egyptian legend, the universe is a vast, orderly system, where the movement of every celestial body and every natural phenomenon follows specific laws. Thoth is like an exceptionally keen observer, constantly monitoring every subtle change in the universe and recording it with precise words. He is also the "source of wisdom and magic." In ancient Egyptian legend, the wisdom he possesses is like an endless treasure, and magic is a mysterious manifestation of this wisdom, capable of transforming nature and influencing destiny. His wisdom is not...
