Understanding Astrology

Sun Signs, Moon Signs, Ascendant (Rising) Signs, and Other Planetary Influences

Everyone is born under an astrological sun sign. Most people identify their astrological sun sign when asked, “What is your sign?” Sun Signs provide general personality information on people born when the sun is in one of the twelve astrological signs, including the day and the hour one is born. Sun signs usually change every twenty-one to twenty-five calendar days. Each sun sign has unique personality traits and belongs to one of the four elements: earth, water, fire, or air. The elements also have certain similar characteristics. Sun signs represent a person’s focal point outward. This is where we have a sense of identity, consciousness, and ego. The sun provides vitality, represents the heat of life, and signifies the way in which we think of ourselves. Finally, the sun brings illumination into our astrological charts.

In addition to sun signs, there are also Ascendant Signs, also known as Rising Signs. Ascendant signs signify which astrological sign was “rising” on the horizon at the time of a person’s birth. Ascendant signs, like sun signs, have unique characteristics. Some astrologers use sun signs and ascendant signs as one and the same meaning. For example, a person whose sun sign is Taurus and a person with an ascendant sign in Taurus would have very similar or identical personality traits.

Ascendant signs are portrayed as the first characteristic noticed by others when a person walks in the room or meets someone for the first time. Example, a person with Leo rising may portray confidence, pride, and a playful attitude upon first meeting someone. As opposed to a person with a Leo sun who may have more innate Leo characteristics, not yet at the surface during a first meeting.

Moon Signs are determined based on what sign the moon was in on the day of a person’s birth. Moon signs change approximately every one to four days. The moon controls emotions, displaying our sensitivity and domesticity. The moon is where we feel safe and “at home.” Depending on a person’s moon sign, certain characteristics are displayed stronger when emotions are heightened. A person’s moon sign is an accent of their sun sign and defines how their personality will be highlighted more so than when looking at the sun sign alone. For example, a person with a Leo moon sign will have a strong pronounced personality. They may enjoy fame and being a leader, enhancing the traits of their sun sign personality.

Planetary Influences may also influence a person’s astrological personality. Each astrological sign is ruled by a planet, the sun, or the moon. For example, Venus, the planet which represents partnerships, love, and money rules Taurus and Libra. Those with this planetary influence in their astrological chart will have an abundance of romance, business partnerships, and strive for peace.

Modalities: Each astrology sign is also placed in various categories, which signifies its quality or manner of expression. There are three modalities, each of which includes four zodiac signs. These are associated with how individuals of a particular sign reflect on life, how they approach and handle challenges, and how they interact with their environment. Below is a breakdown of how these modalities are categorized by astrological sign. Each modality also represents one of each element (fire, air, water, earth).

Cardinal Signs – Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn

• These individuals are often initiators and leaders. They may be quick to start projects but might need the support of fixed signs to see things through.

• Individuals born under cardinal signs are often seen as dynamic, assertive, and proactive.

• They are generally comfortable taking the lead, initiating projects, and pushing for change.

• Cardinal signs mark the beginning of each season:

о Aries (fire) = heralds the start of spring о Cancer (water) = initiates summer о Libra (air) = kicks off autumn о Capricorn (earth) = begins winter

Fixed Signs - Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius

• These individuals are known for their stability and determination; individuals with a fixed modality can bring persistence and reliability to a team but may need the adaptability of mutable signs in changing circumstances.

• Individuals born under fixed signs are often seen as reliable, persistent, and resistant to being pushed around.

• They tend to be steadfast, loyal, and may have a strong sense of purpose.

• Fixed signs occur in the middle of each season.

Mutable Signs - Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces

• People with a mutable modality are adaptable and flexible, making them well-suited for environments that require adjustment. They might benefit from the grounding influence of fixed signs to maintain focus.

• Individuals born under mutable signs are often seen as versatile, communicative, and open to new ideas.

• They are comfortable with change and may possess good communication skills.

• Mutable signs represent the transition between the seasons.

These folks are grounded, based in reality, responsible, and understand the limits of the real world. They are very structured and do not allow emotions to rule their decisions.

Moreover, the positions of these planets at the time of birth contribute to the overall astrological profile.
