This is more than a book-it's a revelation.

Eddie A. Showers emerged from the unforgiving streets of Youngstown, Ohio, where he once walked a treacherous path that threatened to consume him. Through fierce self-reflection and unwavering determination, he transformed his life's trajectory from one of delusion to one of purpose. In a landscape marked by blind zealotry, political division, and moral lethargy, his words serve as a rallying cry for logical rationalization and productive change. He doesn't simply identify problems - he illuminates pathways toward more reasoned existence. CHAPTER

ONE

“As a nation, we have been made better by the lives of those whose experiences took us from slavery to freedom.” — Lonnie G. Bunch

Our family lineage traces back to an indomitable African-American woman known as Big Mama, my fourth-generation grandmother from Selma, Alabama. Her origins remain shrouded in the shadows of slavery; she neither knew her biological parents nor her exact birth date. The cruel institution that commodified human lives had erased such personal histories.

The plantation where Big Mama was enslaved belonged to Eugene Marshall Ward, a white man whose wealth stemmed from lands his grandfather had seized from Native Americans. In 1826, at just twenty-one, Eugene inherited one hundred acres of Selma’s fertile soil. Unlike many landowners of his time, Eugene lacked firsthand farming experience, having been raised in privilege with access to premier education and comforts. He distinguished himself by leasing his land to aspiring farmers, observing their methods, and learning from their successes and failures. This approach ensured his estate profited regardless of the farmers’ outcomes.

At twenty-six, Eugene ventured into cultivating cotton, the South’s lucrative “King Cotton.” He acquired several slaves, including a most understandably timid young girl named Big Mama. Tragically, his ambitious endeavor coincided with Alabama’s worst drought, leading to significant losses. This harsh lesson prompted Eugene to diversify his investments, incorporating livestock, poultry, peanuts, soybeans, corn, and various vegetables into his agricultural portfolio. His adaptability and keen business acumen eventually expanded his estate beyond its original scope, solidifying his status among the elite.

Eugene’s conservative stance on slavery was clear: he acknowledged its moral reprehensibility but continued to exploit it for economic gain, justifying his actions by the absence of laws against the practice. He opposed physical abuse of slaves, deeming it counterproductive and unprofessional, yet he hypocritically subjected Big Mama to sexual exploitation.

Purchased in 1831, Big Mama’s early life was marred by the brutalities of slavery. Born on a Birmingham plantation notorious for breeding slaves, she was torn from her mother’s arms at birth, denied the warmth and nurturing every infant deserves. Named Little Mama by the McConnell family, she was indoctrinated to believe her lack of maternal connection was a sacrifice destined to mold her into the matriarch of many. From a tender age, she toiled in the fields, her childhood overshadowed by relentless labor.

The McConnells’ financial ruin led to Little Mama’s sale back into the slave trade. At an auction, Eugene Ward, moved by her plight and recognizing her potential, purchased her. Perceiving her as a junior overseer, he renamed her Big Mama, symbolizing a new chapter in her life. On his plantation, Eugene implemented a policy he deemed “lenient”: providing slightly better housing, three meals a day, rest on Sundays and holidays, and honoring the Slave Holiday in January, allowing slaves to visit relatives. He believed in non-physical disciplinary measures, opting to revoke privileges rather than resorting to violence.

Under this regime, the Ward plantation flourished, with Big Mama playing a pivotal role in its success. Her leadership and resilience earned her respect from both slaves and the Ward family. However, Eugene’s growing attention to Big Mama did not go unnoticed by his wife, Adeline. Despite his infidelities, Adeline maintained her dignity, understanding the power dynamics at play and recognizing Big Mama’s lack of agency in these matters.

Adeline’s tolerance stemmed from her own struggles: health issues that hindered marital intimacy, a desire to maintain her family’s esteemed status, and an enduring love for Eugene. This complex dynamic culminated in 1833 when Big Mama gave birth to a light-skinned, mixed-heritage baby girl named Viola. Adeline, unable to bear more children after their daughter Cerissa’s birth, saw Viola’s arrival as a bittersweet answer to her prayers for another child. She embraced Viola with genuine affection, creating an unconventional yet loving family environment.

Viola and Cerissa, affectionately called Cissy, grew up as inseparable sisters on the Ward plantation. They enjoyed freedoms rare for children of color in the South, exploring the estate without restraint. Their upbringing was steeped in spirituality rather than formal religion, emphasizing moral excellence and self-awareness. The girls were educated with unvarnished truths about their world, fostering a strong, unbreakable bond amidst a society intent on dividing them.

One of the most striking revelations about my formidable fourth-generation grandmothers was their deliberate departure from traditional religious teachings. Rather than conditioning their daughters, Cissy and Viola, to follow institutionalized faith, they nurtured a boundless, deeply personal spirituality—one that transcended dogma and sought the unfiltered essence of divine truth.

The foundation of their spiritual philosophy rested on an irrefutable truth: humanity did not create itself. To acknowledge this fact was not just an intellectual exercise—it was the first threshold into a heightened state of awareness, a gateway into a deeper realm of consciousness where one could begin to fathom the vast, enigmatic forces that govern life.

Their next spiritual principle was an understanding far more provocative and unsettling—that the true origins of humanity had been deliberately buried. The knowledge of our earliest beginnings, once meticulously preserved in ancient scrolls and sacred texts, had been systematically destroyed—reduced to cinders by the hands of power-hungry demagogues who sought to rewrite history and bend human consciousness to their will. These orchestrators of fear-based theology embedded systems of control that still shape the psychological landscape of civilization to this very day. A truth I’ll unpack in far greater depth as this book unfolds.

Yet, despite these erasures, a fundamental truth remains untouched by corruption: None of us consciously chose to be here. Not a single soul preordained their own arrival into existence. Instead, each of us awakened to it—one day between the tender ages of three and four, when our young minds sharpened just enough to take in our surroundings and marvel at the profound realization: “I am here.”

That moment—the true genesis of every human being’s journey—marked the beginning of an unspoken quest: to seek, to understand, to reclaim the dormant power within. And that power, according to my ancestors, was embedded in the Third Eye—the key to unlocking higher consciousness. By learning to activate the subconscious mind, one could pierce the veil of conditioned thinking and align with their true divine purpose, whether they recognized it or not.

The final tenet of their Sacred Spirituality was their unwavering belief that the Supreme Creator—the Divine Architect of All Things—is, above all else, Pure Love. It was not empty rituals or recited prayers that honored this Divine Presence. Only through a life of unwavering moral integrity could one align with the highest spiritual truth.

And so, my ancestors arrived at a radical and controversial revelation—one that stood in direct opposition to the religious institutions of their time: A person without religion who lived virtuously had a greater chance of divine favor than a self-proclaimed believer whose faith was shallow, and whose actions were steeped in hypocrisy… To my ancestors, spirituality was not a practice—it was an embodiment of truth, a sacred way of moving through existence with purpose, clarity, and reverence. That unwavering belief in embodied truth, in living with purpose and reverence beyond hollow religious rites, shaped how my ancestors loved, led, and endured. It was this same spiritual fortitude that flowed through the veins of our matriarch, Big Mama—a woman whose presence was both sanctuary and shield in a world hell-bent on breaking Black bodies and spirits.

Big Mama’s formidable presence commanded respect across the estate. She balanced nurturing care with authoritative leadership, becoming a cornerstone of the community. Viola admired her mother’s strength and the reverence she inspired, embodying resilience in a world designed to oppress her. However, the family’s harmony was shattered when rogue plantation patrollers abducted eleven-year-old Viola, selling her to unscrupulous slave traders. They swiftly transported her to Edwards, Mississippi, selling her to a plantation owner, severing her from her family. This heinous act plunged Big Mama into profound despair, her once vibrant spirit dimmed by the loss of her beloved daughter. Viola was the only love that Big Mama had ever known…

In regards of Viola, this most unfortunate abduction exposed her to the harsh realities of a world driven by malice and greed. Despite her privileged upbringing, she found herself ensnared in the same brutal system that had oppressed her ancestors. Her initial pleas for release, invoking her family’s status, fell on deaf ears. The men who captured her were indifferent to her identity, motivated solely by...
