Introduction
As a boy, I worked in the fields of a dairy farm just down the road from where I called home. My Grandparent’s farm was within eyesight just across the field. The house that my Grandfather and Grandmother purchased shortly after WWII, roughly 110 acres that occupied the American dream. My Father’s side of the family was a diverse mix of mostly farmers and various other occupations, all deeply connected to the land or providing essential services. Each member of our family contributed to a tapestry of hard work and dedication. The values we held dear were rooted in the understanding that nothing in life was handed to you; every success had to be earned. This belief was not just about achieving personal goals but also about gaining respect through hard work and integrity.
On the property was a large white barn that adorned a sheet metal roof, and the stories behind that structure were vast regarding its construction. The barn was more than just a building; it was a symbol of our family’s ingenuity and grit. Family members often spoke of how my grandfather had constructed it by hand, even after more than 50 years the stories still were handed down throughout the generations. A remarkable feat considering he never had a set of blueprints. Each board he laid, every nail he drove, was guided by the vision he carried in his mind. This barn, commonly referred to as a prairie barn due to its vast size, stood as a monument to his skill and determination.
My Grandmother was a telephone switchboard operator that worked plugging the telephone lines connecting calls at the local office in our home town, contributing to the war effort as countless women did in the absence of their husbands, during WWII. My Grandfather was overseas, fighting in the war to stop the advances of Hitlers wrath of tyranny as many men were at that time. She continued to do this until he returned from the war and then joined him working on the farm that they had purchased. Along with the housework, she could also be found in the barn, tending the garden, or doing what was needed with her husband in the fields. She spent a lot of time dedicated to her home when the pitter patter of feet graced the house growing their family, adorning it with a girl and 3 boys.
Within the years of my youth, I engaged in various tasks around the farm, each one contributing to my growing sense of responsibility and accomplishment. The physical labor was demanding, but I cherished every moment. The sweat on my brow and the dirt under my nails were badges of honor, symbols of the hard work that defined our family. My Father, a man of few words but immense wisdom, taught me the value of persistence and the importance of each task, no matter how small. My Father’s expectation was to do the best in everything that I did take pride in accomplishment whether I was digging ditches or laying the groundwork for something to serve humanity.
I was taught the value of hard work from a young age, that an honest handshake was a gesture of respect, and solidified an accord of commitment. My father and Grandfather alike instilled my work ethic within me as there were a lot of hard days in the fields. The man was never flashy, he was very frugal with his assets and only bought what he needed, instilled in him from bearing the hard times of the great depression. I occasionally rode with him to the farm auction in Archbold Ohio. As a kid I was amazed at the country boy grandeur of it all. He would take his time walking every aisle spending most of the day there as I picked through the treasures and trinkets of items that vendors had for sale. I enjoyed looking at the equipment and would often study the machinery and its mechanisms, I was always curious how things worked. When the equipment failed on the farm, I was there to help with the repairs and was mentored by the two influences in my life that I valued the most. The modern combines and tractors always caught my eye. Seemingly, we would not spend too much time around the green and yellow painted equipment, I always guessed there was a reason for that. At the time did not pay too much attention, as I too was more interested in the red and black.
On the way home I remember having memorable conversations, the golden rays of the summer sun cast through the window of his old faded baby blue Chevrolet Custom Deluxe pickup truck. The warm summer wind stirred in the cab, bringing to life the sweet smell of chewing tobacco. My Grandfather was always making me laugh, he delighted in playfully teasing me, reveling in the silly topics, and fleeting moments that a child adores. Seems he was very fond of telling me about how that people who smoked always had nicotine stains on their underwear. I just thought that was his way of keeping a pipe or cigarette out of my mouth. We always took the back roads back to the house. When reflecting on this, it was within the fields and back roads that shaped the early stages of my life. I was accustomed to hard work and its value. Taking shortcuts to achieve success was not the right way to do things, and that anything free that was offered, came at a cost no matter if it made “cents” or not.
A good part of my entire family has served in the military in various branches throughout the history of this nation through generations. In one respect or another we have been part of just about every major conflict this country has been in. My Grandfather would occasionally speak of his service in WWII within the U.S. Army. We would go into the living room and sit on the Daven-port. My Grandmother would have the windows open during the hot summer months, letting the cool breeze into the house during the latter part of the day and evenings. I remember the short stories that he would tell and get emotional about at times. The words would slowly roll off his lips as he spoke of engagements and pushes of the war. He would start to tremble as his blue eyes would moisten, and wander to a steady stare. It was within these memories that I was compelled to make a difference in the world. I wanted to serve my country, to follow in his footsteps, fill the boots of my Father who also served in the Army during Vietnam. I wanted to be engaged with preserving our way of life the best way that I knew how. To continue the legacy of courage, and honor my family as well as my country, and engage in my commitment. Give to my oath to defend our nation against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. Two weeks after graduating from High School, I followed through with that commitment as I was taken to Great Lakes Recruit Training Command on the outskirts of Chicago Illinois.
When entering the ranks of the United States Navy, I was introduced immediately to structure and cadence within every aspect of my daily routine. This ensured that the installment of discipline, fostered teamwork, assured tactical efficiency, developed leadership, maintained safety and alliance of the team, and building adaptability and resilience. When one messed up, we all were punished respectively. “Make it rain in this ship!!” they would scream, “We are going to do this until one of you passes out!” This routine only happened once or twice... Something like that.
The rigorous training process shapes you, teaches you to follow orders to the letter. Speak only when spoken to, and follow a code of respect that supports the driven culture of hierarchy. This method of systemic training builds confidence and trust within the unit. The structured environment is crucial to maintain safety and security through physical and mental challenges. During the training you’re focus on completing tasks correctly as a group is critical. Though it is challenging to see the structure the military is building, teaching, and executing, following orders, and attention to detail proves to be a valuable framework for developing leadership skills. These directives bring an understanding of the consequences of your mistakes immediately, to re-enforce the foundation of developing leadership skills. You learn from your superiors and gain the necessary experience in taking on leadership roles yourself. You are provided a cadence to follow emphasizing on teamwork and unit cohesion. My respect for organized structure and the chain of command still resonates with me today.
After serving in the United States Navy as an Engineman with the rank of a third-class petty officer aboard the USS Port Royal, one of the navy’s elite gas turbine powered Aegis guided missile cruisers, I absorbed and experienced all the Navy had to offer while traveling the world. Spending two deployments to the Persian Gulf and visiting a vast bit of Asia, Australia, Africa, and a plethora of other locations in those areas of the globe. I was able to witness different cultures work together as a single force. Being able to witness the many different walks of life gave me a sense of servitude and thankfulness to the way of life that we have in the United States. Knowing that the freedoms that we hold dear that has been earned from the blood and sacrifice of many, should be valued and held sacred. After all of what I experienced culturally on foreign soil and also within the Navy, I felt then a different sense of purpose and driven ambitions that led me back home.
Returning from the Hawaiian shores of Pearl Harbor, I was excited to get started with my career in aerospace, as an engineer. I arrived back to Michigan in the summer that year. I always told my family that I knew I was home due to the familiar smell of cow manure and fresh cut alfalfa. I decided to take some time to re-acclimate myself into the...
