A new history of modern Singapore by its leading scholar.
Contemporary Singapore is riven by conflicts over class, language, and ethnicity, with profound societal fractures held together only by repressive legislation. But it did not have to be this way. From 1955 to 1963, anticolonial nationalists promoted a very different vision of post-colonial nationalism. Led by Lim Chi Siong, this movement defended a pluralist, multicultural and multilinguistic concept of Singaporean identity. The Political Biography of a Nation is the first account of this alternative project for nation-building after empire. It offers a new history of modern Singapore, rich with insight into the wider problems of national identity and state formation in deeply divided, unequal societies.

Dr. Thum Ping Tjin is Founder and Managing Director of New Naratif, a movement to democratize democracy in Southeast Asia. He holds a DPhil in History from the University of Oxford (2011) and is the author of Nationalism and Decolonisation in Singapore: The Malayan Generation, 1953-1963, in addition to numerous articles on Singaporean history. He is also host of The Show with PJ Thum, a video series on history and governance in Singapore, and creator of The History of Singapore podcast, which aired on BFM89.9 in Malaysia and is available online at thehistoryofsingapore.com. He is a Rhodes Scholar, Commonwealth Scholar, Olympic athlete, and the first Singaporean to swim the English Channel.
