Recruitment and selection is arguably the most complex and sensitive stage of the employment process. What information can be legally asked of an applicant? What amounts to sex, race and disability discrimination, and what about age discrimination? The recruitment and selection process is governed by an ever-increasing web of Acts, regulations, European directives and case law decisions. This work provides guidance on the entire process, from considering the requirements of a vacancy to offering the contract of employment. In particular, it provides guidance on: the legal framework; how to prepare recruitment documentation; what should be considered during the selection process; how to make a job offer and what special terms of employment can be applied; and what information can be obtained by references and health checks.

Professor Patricia Leighton is professor of European Law at Glamorgan University where she specialises in employment law. She has written widely on equal opportunities, human rights at work, European law, employment contracts and flexible working. Patricia also acts as a trainer and consultant to a variety of organisations. Giles Proctor is a qualified solicitor and consultant to Wachs Caller, Solicitors, where he is head of training. He is a principal lecturer in law at Nottingham Law School and a visiting lecturer at Hong Kong University. Giles specialises in business and corporate law as well as management and skills training for law firms.
