Geographically and temporarily isolated from the main island of Tierra del Fuego, Isla de los Estados marks the beginning of the Andes Mountain range. Known to Western culture since 1616, this island remains one of the least accessible wildlife locations on Earth. Currently, only up to five scientific visits occur annually. Despite its isolation, it experiences human disturbances, including legal and illegal tourism, invasive species, and external pollutants.

"Biodiversity and Conservation of Isla de los Estados (Chuani-sin)" covers three decades of fieldwork, sample collection, and remote, technology-driven data. It summarizes current knowledge of the island s biodiversity and its surrounding ocean, making it an essential read for anyone interested in studying these remote landscapes.

Andrea Raya Rey Seabird ecologist with 30+ years dedicated to preserving Southern Ocean seabirds and their habitats. Passionate about exploration, she discovered Magellanic penguin and sooty shearwater colonies on Isla de los Estados. Active in national and international conservation groups, she collaborates with academia, NGOs, government, and private sectors to integrate human and natural dimensions in research. Member of the IUCN Penguin Specialist Group and Onashaga Commitment, she promotes conservation awareness to protect endangered species.

Ulises Balza - Fuegian biologist committed to preserving endangered wildlife since 2007. Explored the threatened Striated Caracara on Isla de los Estados for both graduate and PhD theses, fostering collaborative research, especially with seabirds. Aims to engage communities in understanding evolving predator-prey relationships and resilience in wildlife populations through the conservation of wild landscapes. Excited about sharing insights and promoting conservation awareness to inspire collective efforts for the protection of our unique and endangered species.
