The main aim of this multi-volume work is to provide, in a self-contained manner, comprehensive coverage of the mainstream of group representation theory. This second volume deals with projective representations and the Schur multiplier.
The principal object of this multi-volume treatise is to provide, in a self-contained manner, comprehensive coverage of the mainstream of group representation theory. These volumes are suitable for graduate students and mature mathematicians working in the field of group representation. No mathematical knowledge is presupposed beyond the rudiments of abstract algebra, set theory and field theory; however, a certain maturity in mathematical reasoning is required. Apart from a few obvious exceptions, the volumes are self-contained. The style of presentation is informal, and the author repeats definitions and formulas when necessary. Many sections begin with a nontechnical description and special effort has been made to render the exposition transparent. This second volume deals with projective representations and the Schur multiplier. Some further topics pertaining to projective representations are covered in the next volume. The bibliography is extensive, leading the reader to various references for detailed discussions on the main topics as well as on related subjects.
