Chapter One

Beyond the Veil

“The child will see and hear beyond the veil. That is our intervention. More than that, we cannot do.”

Before the birth of the child, the world teetered on the edge of total collapse – infact, the entire planet, because of human activity, had fallen into a dark and sinister rhythm. Its towns and villages, cities and states were a patchwork of ostentatious wealth and excess surrounded by crippling struggle, despair, and the fight for survival. And although humanity was at its zenith of invention and progress, it had also unknowingly severed its ties to the wisdom that once sustained it in harmony with the earth, its resources, and the whispers of ancestral knowledge.

Most of the people on the planet had no way of knowing that Earth was watched over by ancient guardians who had been with them since the dawn of time. These beings existed behind a thin veil. Their presence could be sensed but rarely fully perceived. Although evidence of their existence was rare, they were an essential part of the fabric of life on Earth. Like a mystical choir, these unseen sentinels wept in song as they bore witness to humanity’s unraveling. The guardians spoke to the people of the planet not in words but in those quick ripples of thought, echoes of intuition, and flashes of insight that some humans had but could never explain. This is because the guardians had decreed that only a chosen few souls would be imbued with a special resonance that allowed them to pierce the veil and know of their existence. These individuals were humanity’s bridge to the veil, the intermediaries who could either heed or ignore the guardians’ wisdom. Those who chose to ignore it did so at their own peril.

The guardians possessed neither true form nor tangible essence. They could not be truly seen and never touched. And yet, for centuries, they had always been there, whispering guidance to the chosen few humans with the strength and the courage to listen. They whispered to the farmers who tilled the soil, the healers who crafted remedies from roots and herbs, and the leaders who sought unity over domination, evil, and ruthlessness. But as the 20th century unfurled with all its modern technology and complexity, the voices of the guardians grew fainter, increasingly drowned out by the cacophony of machines, industry, and the ravenous human hunger for profit. Humanity, in its hubris, had turned away from the ancestral paths. Choosing instead the embrace of convenience over connection and consumption over contemplation.

Indeed, Earth had fractured. The people had broken their bond with the planet. Where the planet had once shared a single heartbeat that resonated with the steady rhythm of communal harmony, it now, particularly among marginalized groups and people of color, only managed a faint, fading, and inconsistent beat. It was a beat weakened by people who no longer remembered the rich history of nurturing themselves with diets deeply rooted in nature. It was a rich and vibrant history that had sustained life on the planet for centuries. From the vibrant markets of Lagos to the serene rice paddies of Kyoto, from the cornfields of Oaxaca to the orchards of Appalachia, all life on Earth had lived in accordance with the seasons and the land. The guardians had smiled upon these traditions in full knowledge that they were the lifeblood of resilience.

But modernity had changed all of that, and an insidious and relentless current of change had crept across the world. It had begun as a subtle, carefully orchestrated dance choreographed by the unseen hands of capitalism. Corporations, with their gaze fixed solely on profits and mass production, had turned nature’s abundance into artificial commodities. Nutrient-dense grains soon gave way to processed cereals. Fresh vegetables, without hesitation or thought, were replaced by canned goods laden with preservatives. Within the blink of an eye, in every corner of the globe, traditional foods were replaced by the sterile, mechanized offerings of an industrialized age.

No people and no lands were spared. In Africa, for example, ancestral diets of millet, sorghum, and yam were replaced by processed bread and noodles. The vibrant flavors of fermented vegetables and lean fish in regions of East Asia were no match for cheap, grease-soaked, heavily advertised Western fast food. Even in remote corners of Latin America, where corn, beans, and chili had reigned supreme for centuries, processed snacks and sugary beverages infiltrated the daily lives of people, especially the young. Across the globe, communities that had once been defined by their culinary ingenuity became shadows of their former selves as they struggled and buckled under the weight of diseases that had no name in their ancestral tongues.

This was the price of progress, and the guardians observed it all in silence. The people, trapped by the allure of comfort and convenience, had ceased listening to their warnings and seemed doomed to suffer as the consequences rippled outward. They watched as diseases like obesity, diabetes, and heart disease destroyed lives and broke families as they ravaged entire communities. The health systems were stretched thin as they had not been designed to withstand the strain of such assaults. Families were becoming increasingly burdened by medical bills and the emotional stresses of caring for the sick and suffering. Yes, all the guardians feared that all they could do was mourn for the people as their whispers of wisdom were drowned out by the hum of factories and the propaganda of convenience.

And yet the worst was yet to come because the consequences were not limited to physical health. As the modern age brought factories to life, the very soul of humanity began to wither and die. Where once the rituals of cooking and sharing meals had strengthened communal bonds, the rise of individualistic consumption had quickly and, it seemed, irreversibly eroded them. Gone were the days when families gathered around fires or tables for meals. People ate preprocessed meals alone in front of the mind-numbing glow of TV screens. But what could the guardians do? Even they were bound by the laws of the veil. They could not be seen, and the people refused to listen. The crisis was getting bigger, and the planet was getting smaller.

It is undeniable that the United States became a crucial part of this unfolding disaster. It was here, after all, that the convergence of industrial food production systems and systemic inequities combined to give birth to the perfect storm. It certainly did not help that welfare reforms, which were cloaked in the rhetoric of self-reliance, often worked to strip away vital support from the most vulnerable. Without this support, poor and marginalized communities were pushed into a corner with fewer options and more nutrient-deficient foods. Even they began to consider a complete retreat from this battlefield. No matter what they tried, it seemed their efforts to inspire change were thwarted by the blaring chaos of human systems.

It was in these poorest neighborhoods that grocery stores vanished first. Only to be replaced by convenience marts stocked with chips, sodas, and frozen meals. Children grew up knowing and thus craving only the taste of high-fructose corn syrup and trans fats. And their bodies bore the scars of this unhealthy, toxic inheritance. The guardians’ whispers grew ever more desperate as they sought any soul who could hear them, any vessel to carry their message to the people.

But the guardians were not naturally beings of despair. For they knew, in their ancient wisdom, one simple truth remained. Where there is life, there is always hope. They knew this because, for centuries, they had guided humanity away from self-destruction and toward the creation of healers, warriors, and teachers - toward those individuals who could reignite the dimming flames of wisdom and humanity. As the century waned, they faced a dire reckoning. The planet and the people on it had reached a tipping point, and only a singular being, born of deliberate intention and cosmic alignment, could steer them back from the brink of the abyss.

The guardians’ murmurs grew louder as their resolve and determination sharpened. They searched through the ether, looking for just the right lineage. Someone who would be not only the right vessel but who would arrive at the right moment. It would not be easy and would require someone who could walk between worlds and bridge the veil between their two planes. Someone with a mind strong enough to embody body ancient knowledge while also navigating the noise and complexities of the modern world.

It was decided that a child would be born, not yet, but soon. This child’s existence would be the culmination of countless possibilities, choices, sacrifices, and alignments. This child would inherit all the wisdom of the guardians and the resilience of their ancestors.

The guardians decreed that this child would be both a healer and a teacher, a bridge and a warrior capable of surviving even the harshest life imaginable. This child would walk among humanity and help to bear the weight of its salvation.

As the 20th century drew to a close and as the guardians prepared for this child’s arrival, the veil shimmered with anticipation. The world on the other side of the veil continued to churn in turmoil, with the whole of humanity completely unaware of the change just beyond the horizon. But the guardians knew. And they waited.

But they did not just sit idly by while they waited. They planted seeds in the dreams of other men and women, and across the world, the seeds began to grow. Glimmers of hope began to show. Entire movements for food...
