Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, better known by his stage name Molière, is one of the greatest playwrights in French literature and Western theatre. His early education at the Jesuit Collège de Clermont, now Lycée Louis-le-Grand, laid classical foundations that would deeply influence his works. Molière formed the Illustre Théâtre in 1643 but initially faced debt and imprisonment. His fortunes turned after he secured patronage from Louis XIV; his troupe eventually became known as the king's own, 'La Troupe du Roi.'
