Da ormai qualche anno lo studio dell’ornamento è oggetto di rivalutazione sia nella storia dell’arte che nell’architettura e nelle arti contemporanee. Nel 2009 l’Istituto Svizzero di Roma ha promosso una giornata di studi dedicata al tema e incentrata su una rilettura delle teorie sviluppate nell’Ottocento, il secolo nel quale l’ornamento viene gradualmente liberato della retorica tradizionale del decorum.
Il presente volume, con una introduzione di Christian Michel (Lausanne), riunisce gli interventi di Valérie Kobi (Neuchâtel), Odile Nouvel-Kammerer (Parigi), Ariane Varela Braga (Neuchâtel), Harry Francis Mallgrave (Chicago), Carla Subrizi (Roma), Andrea Pinotti (Milano), Katrin Albrecht (Zurigo), Christian Spies (Basilea) e Massimo Carboni (Roma).
In the last few years, the study of ornament has been the object of a reevaluation in art history, architecture and in the contemporary arts. In 2009, the Swiss Institute in Rome has organized a study day on this topic, focusing on the theories developed in the nineteenth century, when ornament was gradually liberated from the traditional rhetoric of decorum.
This volume, with an introduction by Christian Michel (Lausanne), brings together papers by Valérie Kobi (Neuchâtel), Odile Nouvel-Kammerer (Paris), Ariane Varela Braga (Neuchâtel), Harry Francis Mallgrave (Chicago), Carla Subrizi (Rome), Andrea Pinotti (Milan), Katrin Albrecht (Zurich), Christian Spies (Basel) and Massimo Carboni (Rome).

Christoph Riedweg ist Professor für Klassische Philologie/Gräzistik an der Universität Zürich. Er ist Mitherausgeber einschlägiger altertumskundlicher Zeitschriften und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Schriften zur griechischen und jüdisch-christlichen Antike.
