Celebrating 100 years of St Agnes Distillery - Australia’s oldest family-owned distillery

Celebrating 100 years of Australia’s oldest family-owned distillery

The St Agnes Distillery in Renmark, South Australia, has remained proudly independent for five generations. In 2025, the Angove family commemorates 100 years since the distillery was founded and the first distillation of the iconic St Agnes Brandy. This book delves into the fascinating history of the distillery, as author Luke McCarthy reveals new stories about the remarkable people who, despite fires, floods, wars and droughts, crafted Australia’s most-awarded aged spirit. Featuring images from the family archive and tasting notes of the revered St Agnes XO range, discover how the Angove’s pioneered wine and spirit making in the Riverland and created one of the world’s finest brandies.

Luke McCarthy is a freelance writer, author and spirits judge. After completing a bachelor in writing and literature at the University of Melbourne, he worked at the award-winning Whisky & Alement as a bartender and educator, and he wrote a longstanding national drinks column for The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. He has published extensively on the history of Australian distilling and is a senior judge and industry advisory member at the Melbourne Royal Australian Distilled Spirits Awards. His book, The Australian Spirits Guide, the first to tackle the history and revival of the industry, was published in 2016 by Hardie Grant Books. He lives in Melbourne with his family and is a regular contributor to Australian and international publications on the drinks and bar trade.
