Bible gardens and Christian theme gardens with a didactic background are described and analysed here systematically for the first time.Bible gardens are Christian theme gardens with a didactic nature, about 100 of which are situated in Germany, with over 500 worldwide. These outdoor installations use plants found in the Bible, plants with Christian names and symbolic elements to recreate Biblical texts and themes. Katrin Stückrath has chosen 26 German Bible gardens and studies the history of their origin. She analyses their form and function and looks at them from a historical, cultural-theoretical and theological perspective.
Dr. Katrin Stückrath arbeitet als Pfarrerin in der Evangelischen Landeskirche von Westfalen.
'Biblical gardens' or 'bible gardens' have first been created in an Anglo-American Protestant context. During the final decades of the 20th century they became popular all over the Christian world. Biblical gardens show plants and symbols that refer to the texts of the Holy Scriptures. Katrin Stückrath analyses as many as 26 biblical gardens in Germany kept by Protestant and Catholic congregations. The author not only inventories the gardens, but analyses their didactic intentions and focuses on the multiple functions they fulfil in a parochial surrounding. Interdisciplinary inspection of the meaning of biblical gardens within the Christian history of gardening, of the history of research on biblical plants and of philosophical as well as theological discourses on gardens demonstrate the complexity and impact of the subject.>
