Flourishing Together: Karl Marx's Vision of the Good Society provides a novel interpretation of Karl Marx's vision of the good society that places the idea of self-realization in work at its centre. The core idea is that people do not realize themselves merely by exercising and developing their essential powers; they realize themselves through exercising and developing those powers in ways that provide others with the goods and services those others need to pursue their flourishing. This view of self-realization in work carries significant ethical, social, and political implications. It calls for a radical reorganization of the division of labour, requires only a modest level of abundance, and defends the idea that working for others is a vital component of human flourishing. Understood this way, Marx's vision of the good society can withstand many of the criticisms traditionally directed at it and stands as an attractive alternative to liberal egalitarian theories of justice.

Throughout the book, Kandiyali shows the relevance of Marx for several contemporary issues and debates, including the role of work in a good life, the desirability of universal basic income, and the problems inherent in the idea of a post-work society. In doing so, he shows Marx to be highly relevant for contemporary political philosophy.

Jan Kandiyali is Associate Professor in Political Theory at the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University. He previously held positions at the London School of Economics and Istanbul Technical University.
