The Variety Calculus has profound implications for leaders, decision makers in any sector struggling to achieve clarity and agency in the challenging and complex world we face now and in the future.
Cybernetic System Design for a Complex World has profound implications for leaders and decision-makers in any sector struggling to achieve clarity and agency in today’s complex and dynamic world. This book provides the means to tailor organisations, capabilities, and technologies to their specific operating environments, whether simple or complex.

By introducing a new way of thinking and visualising systems, this title enables professionals to better understand situations, design effective solutions, and make confident decisions. Rooted in the principles of cybernetics – the universal mechanisms through which all systems, social or technological, adapt and maintain viability in dynamic conditions – Cybernetic System Design for a Complex World combines a robust theoretical framework, practical tools, and methods to achieve effective agency even in the face of the most challenging tasks.

Cybernetic ideas have been uniquely developed into an accessible and comprehensive methodology that is applicable to all aspects of purposeful system design and allows professionals to navigate the complexity of the modern ‘Information Age’ world.

Gordon Niven is a Chief Systems Thinking Specialist at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL), Porton Down, UK. David Capewell served for 37 years in the UK military, with his last appointment as Chief of Joint Operations, where he was responsible to the government for UK global operations.
