INTRODUCTION

The reality of managing today? It's a tough gig. There are employees who've quiet-quit. Go-getters who are impatient to move up. People who are there for the “good-enough” job. And let's not forget the endless pile of deliverables that seems to multiply like laundry. Leadership today is the ultimate plate-spin—you're part coach, part crisis manager, part hype squad, and sometimes even part human whiteboard.

And if you're like most leaders, you're probably looking for ways to manage it all without losing your mind (or your sense of humor). Because let's face it, some days it probably feels like you're one BCC away from launching into a full-on eye twitch. And who'd blame you if the next overly urgent deadline made you consider starting a new career altogether?

If you barely have a moment to catch your breath (just pressure to keep pace with the next thing), no wonder you feel overwhelmed, trying to stay on top of constantly shifting demands. Organizational changes, rapid technological advances, and evolving employee expectations—it's a lot. And here's the kicker: It's only going to get more complicated.

Instead of pushing through, let's try something different. Because no matter how much we normalize rushing, urgency, and the endless pressure to perform, leadership today is about centering what truly matters: people fundamentals. It's about focusing on everyday habits that build trust and human connection, habits that address our core needs.

Strong leadership thrives on a steady foundation where your team feels valued, heard, and supported. By consistently showing up with authenticity, empathy, and clarity, you can foster the kind of environment where both you and your team can flourish, no matter the pressures or challenges at hand. And that's not some motivational fluff! This is about practical, actionable tools that can make leadership sustainable, energizing, and effective.

And I know with everything in your planner that might sound like a stretch, but trust me—you're fully capable of it. You don't need a glittery magic wand or to work yourself into the ground either. What you need is a clear roadmap that guides you toward the kind of leadership where you don't just survive the day—you actively help people speak up, take initiative, and do their best work. I'm not asking you to pull off miracles here. I am asking you to take control of what you can, be the steady hand, the clear voice, and the reason your team wants to keep going.

For sure, the expectations are high, and the stakes can feel like they keep getting raised every time you turn around. But here's something I want you to keep in mind: you don't have to carry the weight of it all by yourself. Many leaders are facing the same struggles right now—managing performance challenges, cross-team friction, and the constant push to do more with less.

That's where Quick Leadership comes in—designed to bring managers together around real-world strategies, relatable tools, and the kind of support that actually sticks.

You may know me from my work as an executive coach, author, and workplace culture consultant. I've been in the trenches evaluating workplaces, from the best in the world to those struggling. I've seen firsthand what works and what doesn't. I've also coached and trained thousands of emerging leaders, and yes, I've been promoted, managed others, been managed, and even been laid off (yep, I've seen both sides of that coin). I've had wonderful managers, toxic ones, and everything in between. But here's the thing: No matter how many surveys, 360 assessments, or focus groups I've conducted on leadership and culture, I've noticed that leaders tend to over-index on managing performance, and neglect the people side: cultivating trust and mutual respect.

Instead of focusing solely on crushing your performance metrics, we'll dig into how you can build a workplace culture that's grounded in connection, open communication, and a sense of shared ownership. And you don't need to be an infallible superhero or perfectly polished role model to do it! In fact, as a self-proclaimed “eat cake before dinner” person (yup, that's me), I know that effective leadership isn't rooted in perfection. It's grounded in flexibility and bringing a bit of humor along the way. It thrives on being real and using your natural strengths as a leader while learning from your inevitable missteps and challenges.

If you're reading this, it's clear you care about being the kind of leader who drives results, inspires your team, and creates an environment where people can thrive. But you're probably also wondering how on earth you can do all that while keeping yourself (and your team) sane. Perhaps these sound familiar:

  • How do I motivate a team when morale is low?
  • How do I set boundaries when expectations are totally unrealistic?
  • How do I keep my cool when it feels like I'm about to snap?
  • How do I encourage my team to prioritize their well-being when it feels so challenging to do it myself?

I can tell you you're not the only one asking those questions. Leaders everywhere are trying to figure out how to keep teams motivated when burnout is looming, how to manage up without losing yourself, and how to accept ambiguity when what you're craving is certainty. It's easy to feel like you're not doing enough, like you're missing the mark, or, worse, that you're falling behind.

But vulnerability is part of this gig. It's about embracing the constant learning that comes with the role. You might feel buried under a mountain of tasks, urgent demands, and tough decisions but ding-ding-ding! that's exactly when the opportunity to grow as a leader arises. The best leaders aren't those who never get overwhelmed, but those who know how to lean into discomfort, ask for feedback, and adjust their approach. They recognize that they don't need to have it all figured out, and instead focus on staying flexible, learning from missteps, and finding new ways to move forward, no matter how uncertain the road ahead may seem.

I've seen this firsthand. As a coach and consultant, I've worked with leaders from all different industries, and I can tell you this: Leadership is never about having a set of foolproof solutions. The most effective leaders iterate and experiment. They expect some of their hypotheses to be wrong and they learn from their mistakes. They stay adaptable and resourceful, even when the path isn't clear. More than that, they build teams that can do the same: teams empowered to take on challenges and grow alongside them. So don't think you have to figure it all out alone.

This book is about helping you cultivate that mindset.

Quick Leadership offers you practical advice that speaks to the everyday realities of leadership—in a format that's short and sweet, because you don't have a lifetime to learn this stuff! Whether you're managing a small team or trying to wrangle a global workforce, the goal is simple: to help you thrive, not just survive, and, by extension, to help your team do the same.

One of the biggest challenges today is managing employees with different expectations and motivations. Some are seeking purpose, fulfillment, and meaningful work. Others prefer a more straightforward approach: coming to work, doing a job, and not feeling like every task is tied to a higher mission. (As one Gen Z professional recently told me, “I do my job and go home. Work is only one small part of my identity.”) Balancing these different work expectations is no easy feat but it's absolutely possible. This book will help you meet diverse needs and lead a team that delivers.

And you'll see too how leadership requires a healthy dose of self-management. If you're constantly burned out, stressed, and scrambling, your team will feel that energy, too. That's why we'll dive into managing your own well-being as part of the leadership equation. Because leadership shouldn't be a marathon of misery. We'll explore strategies for managing stress, taking breaks, and maintaining perspective so you're not communicating to your team “You should go home now” while you secretly stay until dawn.

Here's what you can expect from your investment of time in this book: actionable strategies based on science and research, practical experience, and real-world advice, so you have tools that help you lead better, starting today. (No endless theories or abstract concepts that sound good in a lecture but leave you wondering how to apply them!) We'll cover:

  • Delegating in ways that empower your team, helping them grow while you tackle the bigger picture: Know when to lead and when to trust your team to take the reins. Building trust by giving others ownership takes time and consistency, but when done right, it reinforces accountability, trust, and loyalty.
  • Navigating constant change from a calm center, so you're not just reacting, you're leading: The pace of change can feel overwhelming, but you can stay grounded by developing a mindset that anticipates change and adapts quickly. This means creating space for feedback, allowing concerns to be heard, and involving people in the process.
  • Creating a culture where your team feels safe to speak up, share ideas, and even...
