In Psychology Today, Damon Centola explained a theory. The theory noted that ‘there would be a tipping point in the social norms as soon as an activist group reached approximately 25 per cent of the population.’

We may only need 25 per cent of leaders globally to ‘wake up’ for the world to become a better place. Shall we do that? Shall we wake up some leaders?

My many decades of being a CEO and also my academic training, including a PhD in Behavioural Science, have provided me with deep insights into traditional paths of leadership development. Historically, cultivating effective leaders has been a long, arduous process — years of education, experience, mentorship, personal growth and proof of results. Yet, as we stand on the precipice of monumental global challenges — AI proliferation, climate change, mental health crises, polarisation and war, among others — we no longer have the luxury of time. We need a new style of leadership, now.

Over the past decade, I have grappled with this reality. I have immersed myself in environments that challenge and reshape leaders: from leading a publicly traded company to speaking at the United Nations General Assembly; from global TV appearances to deep immersion in the Peruvian jungle. Through these experiences, I have witnessed firsthand the urgent need for leaders who can undergo rapid, profound transformation. The crises humanity faces demand a fundamentally different type of leadership: leaders who can evolve swiftly and guide us out of the very precarious future we are facing.

Research from institutions such as the University of Oxford and detailed in Professor Toby Ord’s acclaimed book The Precipice: Existential risk and the future of humanity highlight the stark reality: humanity faces existential risks at alarming probabilities. While the chance of a solar flare wiping us out stands at one in one billion, an asteroid impact one in one million, a super-volcanic eruption one in 10 000, nuclear war one in 1000, climate change one in 1000, a naturally arising pandemic one in 1000 and an engineered pandemic one in 30, the chance of misaligned AI wiping out humanity is estimated at one in 10. These are not distant concerns for future generations alone — they are immediate, pressing threats to the world our children and grandchildren are living in today. As someone deeply embedded in the AI field, I cannot remain idle. I believe that swift action and evolved leadership are imperative if we are to steer humanity towards better outcomes.

This book is a product of personal and professional exploration, forged through my own journeys of rapid transformation. The leaders ready for this path are those of you who felt a visceral reaction to the threats I just outlined. They are individuals driven by the desire to secure a safe future for their families and those whose restless spirits intuitively sense a higher calling. This is an invitation: an opportunity to step into a new level of leadership, one defined by elevated consciousness and decisive action.

In writing this book, I have undergone my own rapid transformation, an unplanned and intense process that unfolded over eight months. Unlike the structured transformations I have facilitated for others, this one emerged organically, without ceremony or preparation. It was humbling, challenging and ultimately empowering. I experienced the unexpected overnight ending of my long-term relationship. I entered an initiation process that I hadn’t anticipated. It was, at times, unbearable.

Initially, I believed I could write this book without fully experiencing such a shift myself. After all, I have had many rapid transformations. But life had other plans. I realised that to authentically guide others, I needed to embody the process at its deepest level, deeper than before. The lessons gained from this unexpected journey have enriched this book, ensuring that what you read in these pages is grounded not just in theory but in lived experience.

In journeying through this book together we will learn that rapid transformation is not about imposing change or adhering to prescribed ideologies. It is a process of shedding inherited fears, beliefs and limitations, allowing our true nature to emerge. It is an unlearning, a reawakening to our core essence. For me, this path demanded responsibility and acknowledgement, an acceptance that I had unconsciously summoned my own initiation into higher consciousness and leadership. The result has been one of the most profound experiences of my life and it is this wisdom as well as 30 years in leadership transformation that I now share with you.

It is also important to note at this early stage of the book that, beyond my professional and corporate endeavours, I have walked a shamanic path. Starting 30 years ago I was apprenticed to a Native American elder. I have also spent much time with Australian First Nations people and I have trained to work with sacred medicines from Mexico and Peru. This intersection of modern leadership and ancient wisdom deeply informs my perspective on transformation. Many of the tools, rituals and frameworks you will encounter in this book come from my role as a leadership professor and entrepreneur as well as drawing strongly from indigenous teachings and transformative practices passed down by elders across diverse traditions. You could say this is an animist approach to leadership.

What to expect in this book

The book consists of five parts, which we will navigate together to better understand rapid transformation. My hope is that in reading this book, you will experience a kind of transformation or awakening in your own right.

In part I, we will begin our journey by exploring why we need rapid transformation. Here, I will put big problems under the spotlight and unpack what rapid transformation truly means for leaders, set against the context of our current world order. I will examine the urgency behind the need for leadership evolution, dissect the global challenges demanding new solutions and uncover why leadership at a heightened level of consciousness is the key to navigating the road ahead. Then I’ll introduce you to my Rapid Transformation process, a roadmap to help you find the way through rapid transformation.

In parts II, III and IV we’ll discover together the three key pillars, or tools, you can use to achieve rapid transformation:

• To begin, in part II, we’ll immerse ourselves in the first pillar of rapid transformation: ritual. First, we’ll address the whispers of change that are likely to be making themselves known to you at this point in the book, before we dive deeply into understanding the ancient art of ritual. We’ll step back to times long gone by to make sense of how these age-old processes can help us be better leaders in a modern world. We’ll look at ritual from every angle to understand how and why it is a language unto itself that speaks to the ancient core of our beings and how leaders can incorporate ritual into their work, creating greater impact. A look into rites of passage will help us make sense of what it means to be an initiated leader and just how important that is and has always been.
• Part III is a cosmic adventure into awakened thinking from expanded states of consciousness, our second foundational pillar for unlocking new leadership pathways. We’ll focus on psychedelics as a tool to expand our consciousness and our capacity — because when we expand our consciousness, we can serve from a place of authenticity and integrity as a healed and whole being. We’ll address curiosities; challenge outdated perceptions; and outline the rituals, practices and safety measures required before even considering working with these medicines.
• We’ll explore the third and final pillar for transformation — leveraging emerging technology as transformational power — in part IV. We’ll address the role of AI in accelerating and enhancing leadership capabilities through its potent and magical opportunities for transformation. We’ll also identify how AI can unlock a range of key leadership outcomes at every scale: individual, organisational, social and planetary. You’ll also learn how leaders can harness the extraordinary capabilities of emerging AI to accelerate their personal transformation as well as that of the collective. Building on this foundation, we’ll explore seven principles for AI development that are rooted in animism and ritual practice. These principles build a model for deep intentionality in our creation and use of AI, to build a future that is not only more productive and efficient but also alive with connection, harmony and meaning.

Finally, in part V, we’ll take a holistic look at the Rapid Transformation process, which details how leaders can receive a calling, integrate ritual into their daily practices, seek altered states of consciousness and embrace emerging technology such as AI in order to transform themselves, their communities and the planet. We’ll also look at what and who the transformed leader is after having been through this process. We’ll explore the attributes leaders can expect to build through this process and understand the mindset necessary to drive impactful change.
