The only thing they need to do is to connect with themselves and be willing to take action. The many steps she has taken in her own life with this philosophy form the foundations of her coaching principles.
Sometimes, don't people approach what would do them the most good with a bias? Deniz, a white-collar worker, would never consider coaching unless he had to, to advance his career in the company he works for. The story of Deniz, who started his coaching journey as a necessity and emerged transformed, lighter, and changed, invites you to follow each stage of his journey that nurtured him and solidified his steps with pleasure. You will witness Deniz regain his lost colors and the effects of this on his company and society. This is the story of how coaching illuminates the dark corners of the path we call life, which we navigate by feel, stumbling along the way, like a lighthouse. Editor: Duygu KARATASWhen the sea is turbulent and stormy, you can see neither your surroundings nor the inside of yourself; similarly, how clear can what you see really be?When I stepped into Deniz's story, everything seemed as if it were in a storm, and I didn't realize that I was also stepping into my own world. I first looked in the mirror. Did the person I saw resemble the person I wanted to be? Then I went back to Deniz. Every sentence brought me closer to him; I walked with him, fell, cried, and laughed Then Oylum entered both of our lives. While coaching Deniz, she was actually coaching me as well. The ethical stance, management style, and details of the coaching process that I had heard of but never experienced before deeply affected me. With this perspective, turning back to myself step by step became an experience I had never had before. I created my own "e;Colorful Values Circle,"e; and like Deniz, I painted my own "e;Top "e; and "e;Life Circle."e; I sought myself on every page and got to know myself better. When it was time to find my scent, I turned back to myself even more. I talked, I listened, I was silent And finally, the storm began to calm. Everything became clearer, and the scents became more vibrant. My scent, it turned out, was "e;Jasmine flower."e;Are you ready to find your scent?Editor: Zeynep COKRAN

Alone with Reality
She had exited the road to the second bridge and was at the Levent intersection, approaching the plaza where her office is located. But due to the construction work, traffic had come to a standstill as the road was limited to one lane. She had an hour before her meeting with Mehmet, her director, for her annual performance review. She had left the house deliberately earlier than usual. She wanted to arrive at the office with enough time to get ready easily. But apparently this was not going to be possible.
She began to pressure the left side of her lip with her teeth, as she did when under stress. At least I could have had time for a hot coffee, she thought.
She and Mehmet had just started working together this year. Their relationship was distant but respectful. Rumours had been circulating for the last three months that Mehmet would be transferred to another country within six months. This could be the opportunity Deniz had been waiting for. She was a graduate with honours from one of the most prestigious universities in the country. She was fluent in English and German as her native language. She started working for international agencies while doing her master's degree in England. Upon completing her master's degree and deciding to return home, she decided to pursue a career in marketing.
It was almost ten years since she took the exam of a leading company in Türkiye and globally in the Fast-Moving Consumer Goods sector and started working in her dream company as a Marketing Specialist. During that period, she had achieved all her annual targets, and all performance evaluation interviews had resulted with positive feedback. Now she was on the eve of putting aside her goal of becoming a “Director”, which she had pursued for years, and embarking on a different career.
A year ago, when Yeliz, her admired director, had left the company to do her own business, she had hoped to replace her, but the management had chosen to hire someone from outside the company, from a dif-ferent sector, someone who was well known in his own industry. Although she had difficulty accepting this situation from time to time, she eventually had opted to focus on her work and put forth her best effort work-ing day, night and weekends, both because of her devo-tion to her company and the opportunities provided by the company. When considering her own performance, she seemed to be doing very well under the circum-stances. She was convinced that she was wholehearted-ly ready for the next position. She had even decided who she would recommend in her place.
She came to her senses with the soreness of her lip. Yes, she certainly deserved the position. She would also raise the issue of Mehmet's transfer issue during the meeting and make it clear that she would request this role should the transfer occur. During the interview, she would make it clear that she would request this role/position in the event of Mehmet's transfer. She was determined.
She headed towards the plaza's parking lot exit, with more than half an hour to spare. It was enough time to have her morning coffee and freshen up her makeup.
She was proud of herself for having prepared her files on her computer the night before. Having a plan ahead of time had always served her well. She believed it would work this time, too.
Following the plan she had made in the car, she ar-rived at the meeting room on time. On the way out the door, she smiled and made way for the office attendant who was leaving the room with a tray. At the door to the room, she caught the smell of fresh coffee. Upon entering the room, she saw that the four-seater meeting table had been replaced by two very elegant and lovely armchairs with a small coffee table in between. On the coffee table were her favorite orange chocolate chips, and next to it she saw a blue mug filled with black filter coffee, just the way she liked it, and next to it a cup of Turkish coffee.
She was surprised. Armchairs instead of a table, a blue mug in her favorite color, a black filter coffee... What does all this mean? It didn't seem like a very real setting for a one-hour official meeting. All these are learned acts, she reflected. But she didn't say a word. She sat on the seat by the side of the blue cup. That's when Mehmet came in. Deniz noticed that he didn't have an agenda or a computer in his hands. “I had prepared so thoroughly, and now look how empty-handed he is,” she thought. Is that how he cares about his work? And six months later, he would be going to the most demanding country abroad as Deputy Gen-eral Manager in charge of Marketing.
Unable to erase these thoughts from her mind, she threw her head back, stood up and greeted Mehmet with a slight smile...
Mehmet started to speak with a genuine smile and a warm voice.
“Good morning, Deniz. Thank you for being on time for our meeting as always.”
"Good morning, I thank you. There was a slight sar-casm in her voice. "Frankly, I was surprised when I walked into the room. The entire layout has been changed. Is this room going to remain like this from now on? It doesn't look very suitable for large meetings, but it's certainly stylish.”
"Actually, yes, I'd like to keep it like this, it's cozier to me than the rooms furnished with a large meeting table, but let's give it a try. I am negotiating with the administrative departments to create such small rooms on this floor, but let's call it a pilot project to observe the effect of the setting during the interviews we will hold this period and to get the opinions of others. If you want, you can hold your vis-à-vis meetings here.”
Mehmet continued speaking, seemingly unaffected by Deniz's judgmental tone. He went on speaking in a natural manner.
“We are here to discuss how the last year was for you in general and your expectations for this year and to determine a road map together. Regardless of the outcomes, I would like to hear your assessment of how the last year was for you.”
Deniz took out all her notes, which were neatly organized in a folder. One by one, she began to speak, going over the titles.
"As you know, Yeliz and I had worked very harmoniously for a long time. To be honest, at the beginning of the year, I was worried that we wouldn't have the same rhythm with you. First, thank you for trust-ing me and my knowledge. When I review all our goals, the fact that all of them have been realized, as you know, is the biggest evidence to me that we worked together in harmony. So I can say that last year was a good year for me in this perspective. I can go through all the targets if you wish, but I don't think it is neces-sary to go into too much detail as we regularly discuss these issues.”
After finishing her sentence, she turned to her coffee cup to catch her breath and to give Mehmet some time. After a short silence, Mehmet kept talking.
"Yes, Yeliz made it clear before she left that I could rely on your work experience and knowledge. As we move forward together, your knowledge and experience have a great impact on our successful completion of this year as the department. That is why I also believe that it is not necessary to go through target headings. But I have a few questions, if I may?”
Deniz was about to say, “Of course,” but taking advantage of the brief silence, she continued and said that she had a few additions to make before Mehmet started.
“I'm glad we're on the same page. Before I pass it to you, I would like to speak a little bit about the future, if I may.”
Setting his coffee cup down on the coffee table, Mehmet leaned back and nodded, as if to show that he was letting Deniz have her say.
"I want to talk to you about your transfer to the global team. As far as I know and have heard, you will go abroad in the mid or at the latest at the end of this year to start your new assignment. We had a good collaboration with you this year and achieved good
results. As I told you at the beginning, after Yeliz's leaving, frankly, I was convinced that I deserved the position she vacated, and I was expecting a promotion. But the company preferred to have a fresh perspective from outside. I respected the company's decision at first, and as I got to know you, I respected you and your knowledge very much. That's why I worked hard. And the results speak for themselves. That is why I believe that I deserve and demand the role of Director, which will now be vacant - if your change of position, which I consider to be genuinely justified, takes place. I wanted to share this at the very beginning of our meeting, because this issue is also very important to me, and I wanted to make it clear in all honesty that I can-not accept even the possibility of an alternative.”
Realizing that she had started biting her lower left lip and rubbing her hands together as she said this, she quickly recovered. Mehmet listened calmly and then...
