Reports of sexual exploitation of children in developing countries are on the increase. This works shows that in order to combat this exploitation, enhanced by an open sex industry for tourists, action is needed on three fronts: on the demand and supply side and the international arena.
Reports of sexual exploitation of children in developing countries are on the increase. Using case studies, this working paper examines the problem. It shows that factors that enhance the potential for the sexual exploitation of children are the ease and freedom of travel, facilitated by modern tourism, combined with an open sex industry catering for foreign tourists. To combat the sexual exploitation of children by international tourists, action is needed on three fronts: on the demand and supply side and the international arena.
