Reshma Sucheran is a distinguished academic and researcher who has significantly shaped the field of Hospitality and Tourism at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) in South Africa. Holding the prestigious position of Research Chair, Prof. Sucheran has been an esteemed faculty member since 1997. She earned her Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2012, with her doctoral research focusing on Environmental Management in the Hotel Sector. Renowned for her proficiency in lecturing and guiding postgraduate research, Prof. Sucheran has been pivotal in developing tourism and hospitality curricula at DUT. Her expertise encompasses environmental management, climate change in tourism, crisis and disaster management, and education and training in tourism. With a keen focus on the global tourism and hospitality industry, she has led numerous independent research projects, including critical studies on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the tourism sector. Prof. Sucheran actively engages in international collaborative research, partnering with prestigious institutions worldwide. She collaborates with the University of Coimbra in Portugal on Creative Tourism, Western Sydney University in Australia on innovative business strategies in response to COVID-19’s impact on tourism, the Federal University of Rio De Janeiro in Brazil on cultural integration through air transport and tourism, and the Guangzhou International Sister-City Universities Alliance on research exchange. Additionally, she has shared her expertise as a guest lecturer at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, Germany, and Chandigarh University, India. She is a member of the BRICS Research Institute at DUT. Her scholarly work includes publications in leading tourism and hospitality journals and presentations at international conferences. Prof. Sucheran is actively involved in academic societies, serving as a member and reviewer for organisations such as the Global Research and Development Services (GRDS), the Global Association for Humanities and Social Science Research (GAHSSR), the Social Science and Humanities Research Association (SSHRA), and the International Federation for IT and Travel and Tourism (IFITT). She also contributes as a reviewer and editorial board member for esteemed journals like the Tourism Review International Journal and the African Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. At DUT, she is a key member of the Faculty Research Committee and the Faculty Research Ethics Committee. Prof. Sucheran’s outstanding contributions have been recognized with multiple awards, including the Women in Research and Innovation Program Grant from DUT for three consecutive years (2020-2022). She has also been awarded a scholarship from the Human Science Research Council (SA) and the Mellon Foundation (USA) for the Summer School Program on Research Methodology at the University of Michigan (1997-1999). She was honoured as a Fellow at the Munich University of Applied Sciences, Department of Tourism, in 2017 and 2022 and received the Golden Key International Honour Society Award in 2013. Prof. Sucheran remains actively involved in the Golden Key International Honour Society, where she has served as President of the Alumni Committee for KwaZulu-Natal. Throughout her distinguished career, Prof. Sucheran has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing the field of tourism and hospitality through education, research, and international collaboration, earning her a respected place in the global academic community.
