With over 20 years in high-stakes neurosurgical environments and another two decades implementing global software solutions for health and payment ecosystems, I've cultivated a leadership style enriched by diverse experiences. Both fields demanded leadership, but the synthesis of these experiences has been truly enlightening, offering a fresh perspective on decision-making processes. My medical background brought the 'human factor' into my approach, allowing me to evolve into a distinct kind of leader that diverges from the conventional.

Trust within teams isn’t just a nicety; it’s a necessity. Effective collaboration hinges on it,
enabling teams to achieve optimal performance. Building and maintaining trust within a team is essential for fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
Product managers can enhance this through regular feedback, transparent roadmaps, empowering team autonomy, and recognizing team contributions. These tools ensure that communication remains open and that goals and expectations are aligned, which is crucial for the success and health of any team.
Remember, trust is not just beneficial -it’s vital for achieving common goals effectively and creating a supportive work culture.
The practices essential for building trust are the same ones that facilitate effective change management. By fostering trust, leaders empower their teams to navigate uncertainties with dedication and assurance. This environment encourages team members to view change as a challenge and a valuable chance to learn, evolve, and excel together. Trust, therefore, becomes the foundation for embracing transformation collectively.
What is leadership trust?[14]
Trust is the bedrock of performance, defined as being ‘uncompromised by doubt.’ In the dynamic workplace, where people face constant changes, and the need to do more with less, doubting colleagues’ intentions, questioning organizational direction, or fearing personal inadequacy can severely impede performance. This is particularly true in today’s landscape of complex changes and ambiguity.
Leadership trust is built through a reciprocal and incremental process. Leaders must inspire confidence in their teams and demonstrate their trust in them. Over time, this mutual trust cultivates a resilient foundation that empowers teams and organizations to act decisively in a fast-paced environment.
When trust prevails, individuals are not just present but fully engaged, displaying high energy, creativity, and productivity. These teams align with a shared vision, embrace risks, support one another, and foster transparent communication. Effective leadership hinges on establishing and sustaining trust across all organizational levels, from individual relationships to team dynamics and beyond.
Everything starts with trust [18]
We regard trust as a fundamental yet invaluable element in the societal fabric of civilization. It underpins nearly every interaction and transaction we engage in -from trading our hard-earned money for goods and services to committing ourselves in marriage and choosing representatives through voting. While we lean on laws and contracts as safeguards, these, too, are predicated on trust in the institutions that uphold them. The certainty of justice being served in the face of wrongdoing is not guaranteed, yet our faith in the system empowers us to engage in significant agreements, even with those we barely know.
This deep-seated trust is what allows society to function smoothly and individuals to make decisions that extend far beyond immediate personal interactions.
Trust is undoubtedly one of the most vital assets a leader can possess. Yet, cultivating this trust necessitates a paradigm shift in how leadership is traditionally viewed. Often, the conventional narrative centers on the leader -your vision, your strategic decisions, your ability to make tough calls, rally support, and display charisma and bravery at critical moments. However, true leadership transcends the individual; it’s fundamentally about empowering others through your actions and ensuring that your influence persists even in your absence. Leadership is less about the accolades received and more about the legacy left behind, the capacity built in others, and the sustainable impact of leadership practices.
This principle is foundational for enhancing leadership and organizational effectiveness. As a leader, your primary role is to cultivate an environment that enables your team members to unlock and harness their full potential and autonomy. This holds true not only when you are actively working alongside them but also in your absence, and most critically, when you have permanently transitioned away from the team. We refer to this approach as ‘empowerment leadership.’ The deeper the trust you establish, the more effectively you can implement this leadership style. It’s about creating a lasting influence that empowers your team to thrive independently, reflecting the true essence of visionary leadership.
In our discussions about trust, we consistently identify three fundamental pillars: authenticity, logic, and empathy. Trust is fostered when people perceive they are engaging with the genuine you (authenticity), can rely on your judgment and expertise (logic), and feel genuinely cared for (empathy). When trust erodes, it often can be traced back to a failure in one or more of these critical areas. Recognizing and nurturing these drivers are essential for maintaining robust relationships, whether in personal interactions or professional engagements.
From “Begin with Trust” by Francis Frei and Anne Morris, june-2020
People often don’t realize how the information -or more frequently, the misinformation- they share can erode their own credibility. Stress exacerbates this issue, prompting individuals to intensify the very behaviors that foster doubt among others. Fortunately, since most of us exhibit consistent patterns of trust signals, even minor behavioral adjustments can significantly enhance perceptions of trustworthiness. When trust is compromised, it typically traces back to failures within these key signals, revealing opportunities for constructive change.
Trust in the context of leadership
In the realm of leadership, trust is a multifaceted and dynamic concept, varying widely in meaning and significance across different cultures and organizational contexts. Discussing and reaching a common understanding of trust is crucial for fostering effective teamwork and leadership across an organization.
However, establishing trust in leadership is not a solitary event but an ongoing endeavor that requires the continuous commitment of every team member. It demands leaders who embody integrity, are ready to adapt their behavior, and engage in the challenging yet rewarding process of collaborating across diverse boundaries and reconciling differences.
Research underscores that trust is a fundamental human necessity -essential for mutual reliance among people, for individuals to believe in their own capabilities, and for reciprocal trust within communities. When trust is robust, it galvanizes individuals, aligning them with the team’s mission, encouraging them to commit to shared goals, engage in cooperation, and empower one another to achieve their optimal performance.
Conversely, in its absence or when it is undermined, the workflow is disrupted, making tasks more laborious and prolonging project timelines.
Given the rapid rate of change in contemporary organizations, the cultivation of trust is more critical than ever, enabling leaders and their teams to navigate challenges and drive success effectively.
Good leadership starts with trust [16]
Trust constitutes a critical asset for leaders in today’s organizational landscape. Defined as the belief in the abilities, integrity, and character of another, trust extends beyond personal interactions, becoming the foundation of most successful organizations, as underscored by research published in the Harvard Business Review. To cultivate trust, leaders must start by fostering a safe environment where team members feel free to express themselves and take risks without fear of reprisal. This involves embracing transparency and authenticity, setting clear expectations, and consistently honoring commitments.
Practical strategies for building a trust-rich environment include:
Encourage open dialogue and facilitate transparent communication.
- Promote transparency and openness in information sharing. Regularly update the team on organizational developments and decisions at the senior leadership level, ensuring that no critical resources or information is withheld. By keeping all channels open, leaders prevent the pitfalls of secrecy and promote a culture of inclusivity.
- Provide consistent and meaningful feedback. Clearly articulate the team’s vision and set explicit expectations for each member. Regularly share insights into how employees are progressing towards their performance goals, offering both praise and constructive criticism to guide their development.
- Foster a culture of open communication. Encourage team members to voice their opinions freely, even when they diverge from the leadership’s views. Utilize both formal mechanisms, such as anonymous surveys, and informal approaches, like soliciting feedback during routine check-in meetings, to ensure diverse perspectives are heard and valued.
Demonstrate commitment through consistent actions and decision-making.
- Begin with self-awareness. Authentic leadership is rooted in a deep understanding of oneself -recognizing one’s values, strengths, emotional intelligence, and the perceptions others have of you. This foundational awareness is crucial for leaders who aspire to be genuine and effective.
- Demonstrate vulnerability. Authentic leaders share their missteps and failures openly, making them more relatable and less perceived as...
