Chapter 1

An Entrepreneur’s
Worst Addiction

Whether you’re a master of self-discipline or struggling to break a bad habit, addiction affects all of us at some point in our lives. However, the addiction we’ll discuss in this chapter isn’t the run-of-the-mill caffeine or nicotine buzz; it’s an addiction that becomes more and more prevalent in the entrepreneurial community with each passing year. It’s one you may not even be aware of: information addiction.

A while back, I had a conversation with a colleague, and he mentioned he had read one hundred books on entrepreneurship within the course of a year. On the surface, this sounds like an impressive accomplishment. I know I certainly wouldn’t have had the time to read that much. Yet when I asked him what those books helped him to accomplish, he was stumped. He couldn’t provide me with a single instance of action he had taken after reading thousands of pages of entrepreneurial insight.

That’s a big problem and one I often see among entrepreneurs. They consume, interact, post on social media, attend events, and then consume some more. The cycle just continues. Then, before they even realize it, a year has gone by, and they’re in the same position that they were to begin with. They might know more, but their life hasn’t changed.

Why is that? Why have we developed such an infatuation with information?

For starters, we’re now exposed to it on a massive level. Moore’s Law states that the amount of information doubles every two years.1

Here are a few key pieces of data that reveal just how much information we absorb on a daily basis.

Every minute:

  • Facebook users share nearly 2.5 million pieces of content
  • Twitter users tweet nearly 350,000 times
  • Instagram users post nearly 500,000 new photos
  • YouTube users upload seventy-two hours of new video content
  • Apple users download nearly 75,000 apps
  • Email users send over 200 million messages
  • Amazon generates over $283,000 in online sales

According to IBM Marketing Cloud, 90 percent of the data in the world today was created in the last two years alone, with 2.5 quintillion bytes of data being created every single day.

Think about that for a second.

For every scroll, letter, book, poem, painting, photo, radio broadcast, movie, report, tape, CD, mp3, mp4, YouTube video, and social media post from the beginning of time until now, 90 percent of it was created in the last two years! With new devices, sensors, and technologies emerging, the data growth rate will only continue to accelerate.

There’s also the accessibility factor. We have lightning-fast search engines and voice-activated technology ready to fuel our need for information at all times. According to ACI.com, Google received over 2 million search queries per minute in 2012—a number that has nearly doubled since. Today, Google receives over 4 million search queries per minute from the nearly three-billion-strong global internet population.2 Based on those calculations, it’s safe to say we likely won’t see a decrease anytime soon.

This age of information overload isn’t just a trend or a temporary shift. It’s our new norm. And while it might feel like an unbeatable battle, it’s really just a matter of recognizing that information is simply just that: information. It’s not action, nor execution, and constant consumption won’t get you any closer to achieving your goals. If information was all you needed to become successful, we’d all be billionaires.

The problem I see with most entrepreneurs is they absorb so much information, whether by attending seminars, reading books, or listening to podcasts, they become overwhelmed. Then, they either take the wrong course of action or, worse, stay paralyzed. Don’t let yourself fall into this vicious cycle! In order to achieve your goals, you must always remember:

Mastery is the highest form of accomplishment.

The only way to become successful is to master the fundamentals that match your end results and goals. The immature learner wants to get as much information as they can as fast as they can, but you usually find them broke, stressed, and lacking real progress. The mature person is very deliberate in what they study and put into their mind. Achievers focus on listening until they’ve fully digested and adopted the information into their daily lives.

If you’re serious about becoming a true, World-Class entrepreneur, you must acknowledge the distractions that hold you back and harness your focus on correct execution. It’s time to get addicted to results and outcomes, not information and knowledge. It’s time to be more selective than you’ve ever been with what you consume. The results you achieve from previous information is the prerequisite for new consumption. You must have specific outcomes and criteria in mind when taking in anything new.

To get you started, below is a checklist of everything I consider before investing my time in new information. This has been a complete game-changer for my productivity, mindset, and results, and offers a simple solution to avoid unnecessary distractions or information overload. So, from now on, before you take on new information, ask yourself these questions:

  • Is this information congruent to my ideal six-month vision? (We’ll cover this in a later chapter)
  • Is this information proven and taught by someone who has the results I want and has values similar to mine?
  • Have I taken action on previous information I’ve learned?
  • Am I certain this is the best information and training available on this subject?

The World-Class lifestyle demands you simplify your focus and get crystal clear on what you want and why. This is pivotal. I promise your “just one more” mentality is doing you no good. One more seminar, one more podcast, one more sales program, etc., is not what you need. You need to dial it in and truly master the principles discussed in this book. I’m going to give you a number of tools to do just that, but ultimately, you must be the one to take action. You must sell yourself on the exceptional life and work for it strategically because like most things in life, it won’t just come to you—you have to create it.

Addiction Math: Checking Your ROI

If you’re someone who’s spent tens of thousands of dollars on training, experiences, and knowledge you never use, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, there are entire seminars, conferences, webinars, and training courses that focus on capturing people just like you: information junkies in search of their next high. I’ll even go further and say universities are guilty of this as well. At a top-tier school, a four-year degree can cost more than two hundred thousand dollars when you include housing, food, and all other expenses. Yet, how many college graduates immediately focus on recouping that investment? Most people talk about college as an experience. They talk about the amazing people they met and how their minds were opened. And while that might be beneficial down the line and very valuable, experiences and friendships don’t pay the bills. This is an area where universities are failing. They don’t provide students with a solid path for recouping the investment they made in their education. If they did, they’d likely have a lot of uncomfortable questions to answer.

Every single decision you make from here on out should be with your eyes open and with a focus on getting a return on your investment. You can focus on experiences and adventures after you find your business success. That’s part of the reward process. The next time you’re ready to financially invest in another informational resource, ask yourself, “Will this piece of information make me more money than it costs?” The answer to this should also include associated costs.

Let’s use attending an event as an example. Not only is there the cost of the ticket, but there’s also your flight, hotel room, meals, cocktails, and most importantly, your time. If there’s a financial benefit or opportunity at this event that recoups that cost, then great. It might be a safe bet. But if not, you may want to sit this one out. Don’t let the fear of missing out or an addiction to information overrule your self-discipline. After all, there will always be another conference or seminar to attend. You must look at investments in informational resources as business decisions with a financial calculus, which will, in turn, allow your decision-making to mature.

If there’s anything I want you to take away from this book, it’s that building a World-Class life starts with making action-driven changes from within. In this case, that means making a conscious effort to step away from consumption. Consider how much new information you can take action on this year. Can you actually convert that knowledge into implementation, or will you be at the next training event before that knowledge reaches fruition? If you can change from emotion-centric to result-centric thinking, you’ll become leaner and more efficient in how you build your life and business.

As for my colleague who read those one hundred books in a year, I challenged him to spend a portion of that time creating and producing instead of just consuming. One...
