Using the audits allows key members of the organization to share a common reference model and a strong conceptual framework from which to take initiatives and to develop targeted capabilities. Each audit is presented in a similar way.
It is often said that 'What gets measured, gets managed'. Unfortunately, most measures of organizational performance focus on the tangible, rather than the intangible human factors; although the latter are often the more significant. The eight audits in Dave Francis and Mike Woodcock's Audits for Organizational Effectiveness are located in the non-financial areas of organizational performance. Taken together they provide a broad set of data-gathering instruments and explanatory conceptual frameworks. The reference models on which each audit is based are rigorous and tested in practice. The authors present each audit not solely as a measuring instrument, but also as a collective learning experience intended to help those who are responsible for finding ways to improve organizational performance. Using the audits allows key members of the organization to share a common reference model and a strong conceptual framework from which to take initiatives and to develop targeted capabilities. Each audit is presented in a similar way. There are guidance notes for facilitators, an audit instrument, a theory handout, a score sheet, suggested exercises and overhead transparencies/PowerPoint slides. The authors' first volume of audits, Management Skills Assessment, has been used in organizations of all types right around the world - from internationally known commercial companies to major government departments. This new volume offers facilitators and organization developers the means to understand and improve performance in some of the most significant areas of the organization.

Dr Dave Francis and Dr Mike Woodcock are two of the best-known writers, researchers, consultants and conference presenters in the field of management and organization development. During 30 years of working together, their extensive list of books and collections of human resource development materials has been widely translated and published in many countries. Their work with organizations ranges over 30 countries and encompasses commercial enterprises from the largest multi-nationals to the smallest family businesses, national and local governments, armed forces, international agencies, charities, other 'not for profit' organisations, universities and management schools. Dr Dave Francis is Chairman of Richmond Consultants Ltd and has consulted widely on organizational values, strategy formation, team development and organizational agility. He is Deputy Head of the Centre for Research and Innovation Management, Faculty member of the Scandinavian International Management Institute and an External Examiner for the University of Ulster. His areas of research include innovation processes, organizational change and innovative leadership. Dr Mike Woodcock is Chairman of the Challenge Group, founder of the University Associates International Ltd, and a lifetime entrepreneur. For 10 years he was a Member of Parliament in the UK where he served on the influential Trade and Industry and Home Affairs Select Committees. A Fellow of the International Management Centre, he has been Visiting Professor at the University of Lancaster and Visiting Fellow at the Leeds Business School. He is a Fellow of the Industry and Parliamentary Trust and the Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme.
