Psychotherapy and the Market System argues that taking the effects of the market system as a starting point in therapy is a particularly effective way to access the inner lives and early experiences of individuals being treated in psychotherapy, showing the connection between the market system and a large subset of the problems that clients bring to therapy. These problems have in common self-evaluation, which is exacerbated by the competition and comparison that is fostered by the market system. The first part of the book describes this connection and explains why it exists; the second part describes an approach to treatment that helps free clients from the negative effects of the market system.

Kalman Glantz is currently a psychotherapist in private practice in Cambridge and Boston. From 1979 to 1985 he taught economics and social science at Leslie University. From 1995 to 2000 he was a visiting scientist at MIT. J. Gary Bernhard has been involved in leadership and management in education for more than 40 years. For many years he was the Director of University Without Walls at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
