Essays in this volume introduce recent anthropological work in food policy. They suggest the many ways that anthropologists can help nutrition specialists, economists, and government officials to plan and assess policies in the struggle against world hunger.
A serious study of male hustlers using experiential dialogue to introduce the reader to real-life concepts and experiences that otherwise could not be effectively conveyed. This book is an attempt to get into the mind and personality of the male hustler through a largely imagined series of dialogues between a well-known fictional hustler and his so-called amanuensis, Samuel Steward. It endeavors to cover all aspects of the hustler's motivations, activities, life style, adjustment, advantages, disadvantages. It tries to accomplish this dispassionately, without prejudgment, moral censure, approvation, or more than cursory involvement. Its conclusions are empirical - based solely on the observations of hundreds of hustlers during more than 20 years spent in the operation of a shop specializing in dermagraphics, a natural gathering-point for male prostitutes. Therapists and counselors in all fields of sexual functioning may find here some understanding of the causes and impulses (beyond the popular "broken home syndrome") which lead young males into prostitution.
It is also intended to signal some of the signposts to danger and serious threats to health that accompany the profession of prostitution. It may also explain to counselors some of the activities and practices of the male prostitute, enabling them to better understand both the fascination and the peril of the hustler's life. Among the hustlers, however, the acceptance of such cautionary advice depends on their intelligence and willingness to confront the daily hazards of their existence. The brevity of success in such a calling is also considered, with some consideratuon for the necessity of long-range planning for the hustler's future.
