This is a four-volume set which includes Lueder's principal economic work, the three-volume "Nationalindustrie und Staatswirthschaft", a paraphrase of Smith's system in which he seeks to illustrate the doctrines of the "Wealth of Nations" by means of geography and books of travel. With this is the first edition of the first German abridgement of Smith's work, "Handbuch der Staatswirthschraft" (1769), prepared by another of the small group of German economists to first understand and diffuse Smith's ideas, Georg Sartorius.

Mark G. Spencer is associate professor in the Department of History at Brock University, ON. He teaches courses on colonial and early U.S. history and the history of ideas in the Atlantic world, including the early U.S. history survey and upper-level and graduate courses on the American Enlightenment and American Revolution. His current research projects include a SSHRC-supported volume on David Hume as historian (contracted with Penn State University Press) and work on the American Enlightenment.

"Uber Nationalindustrie und Staatswirthschaft", August Ferdinand Lueder (Vols 1-3, Berlin, 1800-04); "Handbuch der Staatswirthschaft zum Gebrauche bey akademischen Vorlesungen, nach Adam Smith's Grundsatzen ausearbeitet"", Georg Friedrich Christoph Sartorius von Waltershausen (Vol 4, Berlin, 1796).
