Presents leadership lessons from the campaign trail for anyone who wants to run for office, advocate for a cause, or win a public policy issue. This book provides practical advice and exercises so that individual readers can integrate these leadership lessons into their own public service efforts.
Attorney and activist Christine Pelosi presents leadership lessons from the campaign trail for anyone who wants to run for office, advocate for a cause, or win a public policy issue. Based on the boot camp model Pelosi has successfully used in her actual grassroots trainings, this book provides practical advice and exercises so that individual readers can integrate these leadership lessons into their own public service efforts. Distilling best practices from across the political spectrum she lays out a 7-step program for effective campaigning at all levels of public service:
1. Identify your call to service
2. Know your community
3. Build your leadership teams
4. Define your message
5. Connect with people
6. Raise the money
7. Mobilize to win
In this revised edition, Christine updates the "Call to Service" examples - profiles of current political leaders and what motivated them to enter public service - details the role of social media, the web, and technology as the "great leveller" for political leaders, explores the special challenges of women candidates, and expands on the unique role of volunteers.

Christine Pelosi has a lifetime of grass-roots campaigning experience, most proudly for her mother, US House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Christine serves as chair of the California Democratic Party Women's Caucus, a vice chair of the Veterans and Military Families Council of the Democratic National Committee, and a board member of Young Democrats of America. She has worked as an attorney in the Clinton-Gore administration, a chief of staff on Capitol Hill, and a child abuse and sex crimes prosecutor in San Francisco.
