This text analyzes critical political, social and economic problems in sub Saharan Africa and proposes strategies and policies for revival and progress. The major themes discussed are civil wars, political instability and repression, economic crisis, unemployment, poverty, urbanization, social development, environmental degradation, regional co-operation and globalization. The book puts forward policy approaches for reconstruction of war-torn societies, strengthening of democratic institutions and processes, health improvements, promotion of economic growth and employment, environmental regeneration, and integration of African economies at regional and global levels.

DHARAM GHAI was educated at Oxford and Yale and was previously Director of Research at the ILO's World Employment Programme, head of the secretariat for the World Employment Conference of 1976 and Director of the Institute for Development Studies, University of Nairobi. He is the author of many books and articles on a wide range of development problems such as employment, poverty, agrarian reform, social impact of the environment, social policy and globalization.
