Now decade since the SA Wine industry directory first saw the light, it is continually being developed and refined to make life easier for the industry people and business fraternity who make use of it. The most dynamic section thus far has been the producer section, where the industry has seen a rollercoaster of winery and wine label proliferation since the so-called post-sanctions years. Even so, numerous new producers have been identified through proactive research in collaboration with VinPro's Logistics Department and Sawis, bringing the number of pages listing producers, with winemakers and viticulturists to no fewer than 236 pages. Also among these 600 fact-filled pages is information on the various wine industry organisations, wine writers, wine cultivars, competitions/shows, regulations, key statistics and much more - making this the definitive guide for people with any interest in wine business. Another expansion this year is in the list of scion clones available to the industry, thanks to collaboration by the major nurseries.
The reader will also find yet more prominence afforded to the Biodiversity & Wine Initiative (BWI), designed to add an extra dimension to the richness of our wine culture in the efforts to grow the export market. Among the new sections are guidelines to qualify for BWI. There is also a list of producers of organic wines and grapes, with certification authorities and organisations for organic wine production. Although designed as a reference guide for the industry and not a consumer guide, a basic knowledge of wine's building blocks is always handy and interesting. Thus the expanded section of wine grape cultivars.
