This book covers an overview of the distribution of permafrost in China and its engineering properties as well as its environment protection. Frozen soil engineering of cold regions is the branch of engineering geocryology, alternatively known as a practical discipline of geocryology. It focuses on the measures of line selection, basic design, subgrade treatment and anti-freezing, swelling and sinking of cold regions in construction engineering, subgrade engineering, bridge, culvert and tunnel, water conservancy engineering, pipeline engineering, overhead transmission line engineering and airport construction. Moreover, this book is the latest result of exploration of frozen soil engineering, basic design of subgrade, construction and engineering hazard treatment. It will be a valuable read for both researchers, professionals and graduate students working in frozen soil research, engineering technology, civil construction, environmental engineering and civil engineering.

Prof. Qingbai Wu works at Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the director of State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering, a winner of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and a national candidate for the “Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Project.” He is also the executive director and deputy secretary-general of China Society of Cryospheric Science (CSCS), the director of Specialized Committee on Permafrost and one of members of the Glacier and Frozen Soil Branch of Chinese Geographical Society. Professor Wu is mainly engaged in the basic research of frozen soil environment and the engineering application. Taking the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as the research area, he has made important research progress in the study of the interactions of permafrost and climate, environment and engineering. Prof. Changjiang Tong works at State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering, Northwest Institute of  Eco-Environment and Resource, Chinese Academy of Science. Lanzhou, Gansu, China. Tong Changjiang (1948 - 2023), a researcher at the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources), formerly served as the director of the Permafrost Forecasting Department. He was engaged in the research of permafrost mechanics and engineering, and achieved significant results in the prevention and control of soil frost heave and building frost damage. He participated in the permafrost research of major projects such as the Qinghai-Tibet Railway and the China-Russia oil and gas pipeline, and led the permafrost research of projects such as the Arctic Village Airport in Mohe County, Heilongjiang Province, and the high-voltage direct current transmission line from Golmud to Lhasa. He played a key role in the design, construction and long-term monitoring of the permafrost section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and his related achievements won the National Science and Technology Progress Award.
