Global agriculture production systems are confronted with difficulties due to increased food demand, rising hunger and malnutrition, negative climate change effects, and overuse of natural resources. According to the FAO's definition of sustainable food and agriculture, agricultural strategies should support technologies that increase output without having a negative impact on biodiversity or natural resources, while also boosting productivity. A plant's biostimulants are natural products which stimulate a plant's nutrition and productivity through enhancing nutrient use efficiency, tolerance to abiotic stress and quality traits. The present book studies arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), a plant biostimulant which forms symbiotic relations with plants, having a significant impact on performance and nutrition, particularly regarding plant mineral intake capacity. AMF, through several mechanisms in plants, can boost immunity against biotic and abiotic stresses. Exploitation of AMF to improve crop productivity will be the key for future sustainable agriculture.

Arvind Kumar Rai is presently Head of Soil and Crop Management Division, at ICAR–Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, India. His research work is on reclamation and rehabilitation of alkali soil with different mineral, chemical and biological amendments; alternative techniques for use of poor-quality water through chemical and biological approaches; and improved management practices for use of saline water in salt affected soils of semiarid regions. Priyanka Chandra is a scientist in the field of Agricultural microbiology at ICAR. Currently, her research is focused on native mycorrhiza of salt affected soils and their assessment for improving P nutrition under salt stress. Nirmalendu Basak is Scientist in Soil Science at ICAR–Central Soil Salinity Research Institute (CSSRI), Karnal, Haryana, India. He is engaged in research work: reclamation and rehabilitation of alkali soil with different mineral, chemical and biological amendments Parul Sundha is presently working as scientist at ICAR–CSSRI. She is working on the reclamation and rehabilitation of sodic soils with different organic and chemical amendments and their ecotoxicological impacts.Dr R. K. Yadav is presently Director at ICAR–CSSRI. He is engaged in research of characterization and classification of salt affected soils and poor-quality water for their productive utilization in agriculture.
