Never Gave Up Just Gave Back
Sarah Jouault
A hundred of us stand on the edge of Swanley Lake, Kent, on the morning of 19 September 2004. I am 51 and attempting for the first time to win a place in one of the world’s most mentally and physically testing sporting contests. The Great Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. Only one or two in each age group will make it through, 20 in total, from Swanley.
The countdown begins, 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1! The horn blasts and we’re off, running into the ice-cold lake. Except, of course, for me there’s one minor problem. I have a dreadful fear of water; a phobia of my head going below the surface. I know, hard to believe. As much as I can only swim breaststroke rather than the quicker, more powerful front crawl, I’m scared. I can’t see the bottom of the lake, but somehow I’m in there and swimming alone.”
From the sun-drenched plains of South Africa to the towering peaks of ultramarathon glory, Sarah Jouault’s journey is one of resilience, courage, and triumph. Raised amidst the vibrant tapestry of South African culture, Sarah’s life took a harrowing turn when she faced a brutal assault, yet from the depths of despair, she emerged stronger than ever. Through the highs and lows of marriage and loss, Sarah found solace in the rhythm of her footsteps, embarking on a remarkable quest to conquer ultramarathons across the globe. With each stride, she not only shattered records but also shattered stereotypes, proving that adversity is no match for the indomitable human spirit. Now, adorned with medals from distant lands, Sarah’s legacy extends far beyond the finish line, as she continues to inspire others and generate thousands of pounds for charity with each race she conquers. Join her on this extraordinary journey of courage, determination, and the power of giving back.
