The art of hedgelaying (or layering) has been practised for centuries and for good reasons. It maintains a dense, healthy hedge which forms a secure barrier while encouraging wildlife. Unfortunately, this skill is now in decline having been superseded by machinery which trims the top but leaves a build-up of debris at the base, discouraging growth from below and leading to unsightly gaps through which stock could escape.
