Animal blood is the most important biological fluid for monitoring their health, feeding, maintenance and treatment. A lot of data has been accumulated on the blood biochemistry of both humans and some animals (mainly dogs and cats). However, there is no comprehensive monograph that systematically describes data on the blood biochemistry of pigs of different breeds and their commercial hybrids. The monograph is compiled on the basis of modern data and research methods using numerous material of various scientists (especially working in the Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry named after Academy Member L.K. Ernst), and can be recommended to researchers at academic institutions, graduate and senior students of universities, as well as specialists in the field of biology (primarily biochemistry) of animals, scientific-&-technical personnel of production facilities, farms and companies working in the field of livestock farming.

Prof (Ph.D., D.Sc.) Sergei Yu. Zaitsev graduated (1980) from the Moscow State University, Russia, with a Ph.D. (1986) and D.Sc. in chemistry (1995), D.Sc. in biology (2007), and a Professor of BioChemistry (2005). From 1980 to 1999 he was a scientist in the Shemyakin–Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (Russian). From 1991 to 1993 he was a visiting scientist in universities and research institutes in the U.S.A. and Germany. Then, from 1999 to 2019 he was head of the Department in the K.I. Scriabin Moscow State Academy of Veterinary Medicine and Biotechnology (Moscow SAVMB). Since 2019, he has been working as a leading scientist in the L.K. Ernst Federal Research Center for Animal Husbandry (Russia). Zaitsev has 920 publications (2428 citations), including 15 monographs, 12 patents, etc., and supervises 22 Ph.D.-students and 100 Magister-students. His major monographs are "Biochemical-physicochemical methods for studying cow's milk" (2024), "Biological chemistry: from biologically active substances to organs and tissues of animals" (2017) and "Tensiometric and biochemical analysis of animal blood: fundamental and applied aspects" (2016).
