Numerous factors contribute to suboptimal reproductive performance in dairy cattle (Chebel et al., 2004; Demetrio et al., 2007; Santos et al., 2009; Santos et al., 2004). While fertilization rates approach 100 % in heifers (Santos et al., 2004) and around 77 % in lactating dairy cows (Sartori et al., 2002) conception rates to first service established at the time of pregnancy diagnosis are considerably lower (Demetrio et al., 2007; Lucy, 2001; Santos et al., 2004). Low pregnancy rates are caused in early pregnancy or, by insufficient estrus detection and resulting insufficient service rates. The overall objective of this thesis was to identify aims that could support or increase reproduction performance of dairy cattle i.e. to support the early pregnancy to avoid embryonic losses and to optimise the service rate of cycling cattle. Especially I set out to: 1. provide a comprehensive and evidence-based overview of the literature regarding the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) in the field of reproductive performance in cattle considering the evidence the studies performed. This first paper entitled “Wirkung nicht-steroidaler Antiphlogistika (NSAIDs) auf die Fruchtbarkeit beim Rind: Eine Literatur-Übersicht” has been published in Tierärztliche Praxis 2009 (37 (G): 7-16; IF 0,254). 2. evaluate the effect of flunixin meglumine and carprofen on pregnancy rate in dairy heifers and cows. The results of two independent field trials “Effect of Flunixin Meglumine and Carprofen on Pregnancy Rates in Dairy Cattle” have been published in the Journal of Dairy Science 2010 (93(11):5140-5146; IF 2,463). 3. determine the efficacy of an intravaginal progesterone insert (CIDR®) on service rate and pregnancy rate in dairy heifers. This first paper entitled “Effect of CIDR on 4-day- Service-Rate, Pregnancy Rate and Vaginal Irritation in Dairy Heifers” has been accepted by Tierärztliche Praxis (G) 2011.
