Saudi Arabia:
Portraits of Change, Volume 1: 1940s–1960s explores the dawn of modern infrastructural development and industry in
Saudi Arabia, a period that laid the foundation for the Kingdom’s future
ascendance. The photography of Cecilia Green masterfully documents these
transformative decades, capturing scenes of traditional life and living
cultural heritage set against the backdrop of revered cultural sites. It was a
dynamic and transformative moment, when the introduction of airways, rail
transit, concrete homes, comprehensive highway networks, desalination plants,
and modern state buildings collectively defined the immediate post-oil period
of the 1940s–1950s.
Joy Ashworth is the founder and curator of Arabian Album, an archive dedicated to preserving historical photographs that document the Middle East’s transformation over the twentieth century. Her connection to the region began in the 1980s while working on the design of the Natural History Museum in Muscat, Oman, where she developed a deep appreciation for its landscapes, heritage, and culture. Over the ensuing decades, inspired by her friendships with photographers Cecilia Green and Shirley Kay, Ashworth began collecting and safeguarding rare images that capture a world now largely vanished. Through Arabian Album, she continues to champion the preservation and cataloguing of these visual records, ensuring their availability for future generations.
