This book describes how to build devices out of solid-state qubits, and how they can be used. It explores the ideas and practical applications of quantum engineering, especially in quantum computing. Written primarily for graduate students in physics, this book also serves electronic engineers working in quantum engineering.
'Quantum Engineering' covers the theory, design, fabrication and applications of quantum coherent solid-state structures. This updated and expanded second edition provides a self-contained presentation of the theoretical methods and experimental results in both first and second waves of quantum technology innovation. Topics span the quantum theory of electric circuits, theoretical methods of quantum optics in application to solid-state circuits, the quantum theory of noise, decoherence and measurements, Landauer formalism for quantum transport, the physics of weak superconductivity and the physics of two-dimensional electron gas in semiconductor heterostructures. The author introduces microscopic ion- and defect-based qubits, currently among the most successful platforms for quantum computation and quantum sensing. Reflecting the significant progress of quantum hardware, state-of-the-art implementations such as quantum metamaterials and quantum reservoir computing are also added to the discussion. Written for graduate students in physics, this book also serves electronic engineers working in quantum engineering.

A. M. Zagoskin is a Reader in Physics at Loughborough University, UK. Educated in Kharkov State University, Ukraine (former USSR), he has held research positions at the B. Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering, Ukraine, Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and at the University of British Columbia, Canada. His research interests include quantum many-body theory, mesoscopic superconductivity, quantum information processing in solid-state devices and quantum metamaterials. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the UK Institute of Physics. He was co-founder, first Chief Scientist and VP of Research at D-Wave Systems (1999–2005), the first commercial quantum computing company (now D-Wave Quantum, Inc.). Zagoskin is the author of 'Quantum Theory of Many-Body Systems' (Springer, 1998, 2nd ed. 2014) and 'Quantum Mechanics: A Complete Introduction' (Hodder, 2015).
