This book is an "open access" publication on the state of development of electromobility. There is no doubt that the automotive industry is undergoing profound change. Electromobility is fundamentally changing existing vehicle and drive concepts. Determined by new vehicle components such as the battery, power electronics, electric motor and fuel cell, the entire value creation process is changing. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the challenges and solutions in all areas: from product development and the manufacture of electric vehicles to the development of infrastructure, new business models and the potential for sustainability.

How far back does the history of electromobility go? Which specific systems can be found in electric vehicles and how are they manufactured through to the entire vehicle? What are the technical and legal/regulatory framework conditions for e-mobility? What is the situation regarding the necessary infrastructure? What new business models are emerging along the electromobility value chain? And how sustainable is electromobility really? This book provides answers to these and other questions in seven informative chapters. For the third edition, all content has been restructured and brought up to date with the latest technological developments.

Professor Dr.-Ing. Achim Kampker has been a university professor in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen University since April 2009. From 2009 to 2013, he headed the Chair of Production Management at the Machine Tool Laboratory (WZL) there. In 2014, he founded the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH, which he has headed ever since. Achim Kampker is co-inventor of the "StreetScooter" electric vehicle and is involved in numerous commitments and initiatives in the fields of battery production, electromobility and sustainability.

Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt.-Ing. Heiner Hans Heimes has been Managing Senior Engineer of the Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) at RWTH Aachen University since 2019 and, together with Professor Achim Kampker, is responsible for the strategic and operational management of the chair. From 2010 to 2014, Heiner Heimes was a research associate at the Machine Tool Laboratory (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University and headed the Electromobility Laboratory (eLab) at RWTH Aachen University from 2015 to 2019. Dr. Heiner Heimes' field of research includes the production technology of lithium-ion batteries, on which he has developed a lecture at RWTH Aachen University.
