Neurodiversity isn’t a niche - it’s a natural part of being human. We now expect our public buildings to meet physical access needs; it’s time to turn to the creation of neurodivergent-inclusive spaces. Sensing Spaces is your guide to making that essential shift in the built environment.
Drawing from recent research and real-life stories, the book explores how architecture can better support the 15% of people who are neurodivergent. From the voices of neurodivergent professionals themselves to detailed examples of best practice, this is a compelling blueprint for change.
Packed with UK-based case studies and international comparisons, you’ll see how inclusive design comes to life – from workplace layouts to public spaces, and from hospitals to transport hubs. The book digs into practical detail – lighting, acoustics, materials, and more - showing how thoughtful design can reduce stress and restore dignity.
Crucially, it explains why designing for neurodiversity benefits everyone. Architects, developers, and building users alike will gain a roadmap for creating environments that are not just functional, but fundamentally fair.
