Conventional textile production is an energy-hungry process characterized by the huge consumption of water and other chemicals. To overcome these challenges, interest in advanced sustainable technologies in textile chemical processing have been growing exponentially over recent years. With recent breakthroughs in the textile sector involving sonochemistry, the consumer market is expanding, with textiles finding a wide range of applications in the field of defense, the medical sector, sports, fire protection, radiation protection, etc. Sonochemistry offers several advantages in terms of energy savings, low environmental impact, ease of use, economy, and high treatment speed, and therefore has rapidly gained attention in the textile industry.
Shahid Ul Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities at Jamia Millia Islamia (Central University), New Delhi, India. Prior to joining Jamia, he was a Fulbright Scientist at the University of California Davis, United States. He works at the interface of materials science and textile engineering, with an emphasis on the functionalization of textile and polymeric materials for use in different applications.
