This new edition incorporates the fundamentals of the subject into analytical methods, modeling approaches, numerical methods, experimental procedures, numerical evaluation procedures, and design techniques. It introduces the fundamentals, and then moves on to more advanced concepts and applications. It discusses analytical methods using simple mathematics, examples and experimental techniques, and it includes a large number of worked examples and case studies that illustrate practical and real-world usage.
Mechanics of Materials serves as both a textbook and a reference book for engineering students and practicing professionals.
A solutions manual and figures slides are valuable for all qualified textbook adoptions.
Dr. Clarence W. de Silva is a Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at the University of British Columbia with an exceptional academic career spanning multiple prestigious institutions. He holds Fellow status in ASME, IEEE, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and the Royal Society of Canada, and has occupied several distinguished chair professorships, including the Senior Canada Research Chair in mechatronics. His impressive educational background includes PhDs from MIT and Cambridge, a Higher Doctorate (ScD) from Cambridge, and an honorary D.Eng. from Waterloo. Dr. de Silva's career is marked by numerous fellowships and awards, including the Paynter Outstanding Investigator Award and IEEE Third Millennium Medal, alongside extensive editorial responsibilities for major journals, including serving as Editor-in-Chief for multiple international publications. His scholarly contributions are extraordinary, encompassing 26 technical books, 19 edited volumes, 51 book chapters, over 300 journal articles, a similar number of conference papers, and 48 keynote addresses at international conferences, with recent publications focusing on dynamic systems, sensors, mechatronics, and engineering mechanics. Nimali Tennekoon is a Senior Lecturer at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) with extensive expertise in mechanical and materials engineering. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Honors) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 1993, followed by an MPhil in Materials and Manufacturing Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University, UK. A Chartered Engineer and member of the Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), IEEE, and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS), she currently serves as the principal investigator of the Soft Robotics Research Group (SORRG) at OUSL. Her research focuses on soft robotics, finite element analysis, and multi-axial fatigue, and she has authored over 100 publications in academic journals and conference proceedings, establishing herself as a significant contributor to her field.
