BOOK 1:
Nuclear War Skills
Overview
A nuclear weapon is a device that creates an explosion by using a nuclear reaction. The weapons can be in form of missiles or bombs and they give four types of energy: radiation, blast waves, heat, and intense light.
A nuclear weapon explosion creates a large fireball where everything inside vaporizes and is carried upward, creating a mushroom-shaped cloud. This material in the cloud condenses into dust-like particles and drops back down as fallout, which can be carried by wind to locations far from the explosion. Fallout particles are radioactive and can contaminate anything they land on.
The impacts of a nuclear weapon range from destruction, injury, and in most cases, death. The injuries and deaths are from the blast wave and heat, but the people who manage to survive are at risk of getting exposed to radiation sickness caused by the nuclear radiation.
People further from the blast but in the path of the fallout are at a risk of experiencing health complications caused by radiation sickness and irradiated food and water sources.
While the blast wave lasts a little over a minute, the immediate destruction does not. In some cases, the blast can cause a firestorm like what happened to Hamburg during World War II, where the chemicals from the bombing resulted in a firestorm that claimed over 45,000 lives. Perhaps a better example of this is the most infamous bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which also resulted in a firestorm that claimed countless lives and affected many in the aftermath.
All this is in the case of a single nuclear explosion, but in the case of a nuclear war, with unprecedented explosions, the consequences would be devastating. There are arms reduction treaties in place but with thousands of nuclear weapons in the world arsenals, there is no telling what will happen in the future, and it is very important to prepare in the case of a nuclear attack.
With those facts, the idea of a nuclear attack seems farfetched, but just to put things into perspective, it wouldn’t take a hostile government to attack another country. At least not when terrorists from all over the world have access to radioactive materials and bomb-making components and are not afraid to use them. Nuclear experts have voiced concerns as avenues of attaining radioactive materials grow and the inadequacy with which countries with nuclear materials guard them.
According to a homeland security report, there have been cases of radioactive materials theft from various medical facilities in the United States. The probability of getting past intelligence and law enforcement to detonate a nuclear device seems to grow every single day.
Without considering all the other factors, the threat in itself lies in the existence of nuclear capabilities of any given country. A radiation explosion, as seen in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, can be deadly and long-term.
An all-out war has the potential of destroying a nation’s existence. It would destroy materials necessary for survival. The stocks of food would be gone and contaminated water unfit for consumption will render people dehydrated. Whatever supplies would be left would only serve to support a smaller population and even that wouldn’t last long.
Contact with fallout would expose the surviving population to high radiation levels with low rates of recovery.
As mentioned earlier, the first step to prepping is acceptance. Coming to terms that disaster is always looming and that you are the only one with your best interest at heart is the beginning. In the case of a nuclear attack, it’s important to understand the effects it would cause.
It’s not a question of if, but of when.
The Dangers Of Nuclear Weapons: Myths And Facts
A nuclear war would cause incomprehensible damage to the world but it would not be the end of human life on earth; far from it actually. This is not to say that nuclear weapons are similar to other weapons—they are not; however, the information about them has been exaggerated.
Many people from all over the world fail to learn survival skills because they don’t see the purpose behind it. They are under the assumption that in the case of a nuclear war or attack, the human race will be wiped off from the face of the earth. The ideas sold to us about nuclear weapons are what shape this mindset, and you need to be able to discern facts from myths.
There are many ideas of what a nuclear attack would look like. Some of the opinions are based on past events, but for the most part, the entertainment industry has worked to shape an apocalyptic image in our minds in the case of a nuclear war. Most of this information is exaggerated and nonfactual.
To address this, below are some myths and facts that are necessary to learn before delving into survival skills necessary in the case of a nuclear war.
Nuclear Weapons Do Not Pose Any Real Threats
This is a myth.
The fact is that there exist about 26,000 nuclear weapons worldwide, some of which are ready to be launched in a moment’s notice. They pose a great threat to global security as a single bomb dropped in a city could kill millions of people. Unless we suddenly decide to get rid of nuclear weapons, which is unlikely to happen, then they will be used again. Whether this will happen intentionally or by accident, the effect will still be devastating.
Nuclear Weapons Can Be Used Legitimately
Another myth to this is that there is any legitimate use for a weapon that has the potential to wipe out an entire population of a given place.
The fact is that nuclear weapons kill indiscriminately. Their long-term effects are widespread and not just to the human race but pose a danger to the environment, as well.
Nuclear Weapons Pose A Threat To Terrorists
This is a myth as most people are under the assumption that terrorists are rational human beings.
The fact is that a nuclear weapon is not a deterrent to terrorists and cannot be used as a counterthreat without harming more than its intended target.
No Leader Would Be Crazy Enough To Actually Use A Nuclear Weapon
This is a myth as, historically, leaders of nuclear-armed countries have stated and used nuclear weapons before. It would be quite naïve to assume that they have developed a change of heart in recent years.
For instance, the US leaders used nuclear weapons in World War II against Japanese cities. The US leaders are considered to be highly rational, but this was a decision that caused tremendous devastation on the affected population, who are still dealing with the aftermath of an incident that took place decades ago.
There are policies in place to keep this from happening again, but given the opportunity, most leaders would use nuclear weapons and many have come close to doing just that.
Nuclear Weapons Make A Country Safer
This is a myth and couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many people that believe that nuclear weapons protect a country by deterring potential threats by threatening massive nuclear retaliation.
The fact is that nuclear weapons provide a false sense of security. The truth is that there are no guarantees that a threat of retaliation will actually succeed in preventing an attack. There are many factors that stand in the way of this and some of them include irrational leaders, faulty communications that could lead to misunderstandings, and accidents. Any of these factors pose a threat and it wouldn’t matter whether or not you have the nuclear weapons to retaliate. Not to mention the fact that nuclear weapons enhance the risk of terrorism.
Fallout Radiation Would Kill Everyone
The myth around this is that in the case of a nuclear war, fallout radiation would poison the air and all parts of the environment and wipe out all living things.
The fact is that in the event of a nuclear weapon explosion, some fallout particles reach the ground at the location of the explosion while others are carried away by the winds for tens of thousands of miles. The fallout particles that fall to the ground in high concentrations will take a few hours to be completely deposited. In the case of the other particles that are carried by the wind, the fallout particles small enough to be inhaled into the lungs and invisible to the naked eye would remain airborne for weeks to years before eventually reaching the ground. This will allow for a widespread dispersal and the radioactive decay will make them much less dangerous.
What this ensures is that the danger from fallout radiation...
