In-depth analysis of modeling, estimation, and control design within tubular reactors embodying hyperbolic and parabolic PDE systems. It examines both linear and nonlinear cases, linking distributed parameter models to ODE approximations while revealing a spectrum of applications in biological, chemical, and environmental systems.
This book analyzes a variety of results related to the modeling, analysis, estimation, and control design and the applications of different configurations of tubular reactors of two classes of partial differential equations (hyperbolic and parabolic), both linear and nonlinear. The advantages of using the tubular reactor case to study distributed parameter systems (DPS) are that it covers:

a large class of partial differential equations,
the link between the PDEs of the tubular reactor models and the ODEs used for approximation for the practical application of state observation and control schemes, and
a large spectrum of applications in biological, environmental and chemical systems.

Denis Dochain is Emeritus Full Professor at the UClouvain, Belgium. He has been with LAAS-CNRS (Toulouse, France), Polytechnique de Montréal, FNRS (Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique), Belgium, the INMA pole of the ICTEAM institute, and Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. He is senior editor of Journal of Process Control, associate editor of Automatica, former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Process Control, and former senior editor of IEEE Transactions of Automatic Control. He received an Outstanding Service Award from IFAC and is an IFAC Fellow and an IEEE Fellow. He is a Doctor Honoris Causa at Grenoble INP. He is the author or co-author of five books, more than 180 papers in refereed journals, and more than 280 international conference papers. His main research interests are in the field of distributed parameter systems, nonlinear systems, parameter and state estimation, and adaptive extremum seeking control with application to microbial ecology, environmental, biological, and chemical systems, pulp and paper processes, polymerization reactors, and electric systems.
