Quantal and Classical Coherence and Correlation begins with exploring the general mathematical and physical concepts of coherence and correlation and provides a comparative discussion of classical and quantum coherence and correlation. In this context, the author explains the principles of quantum information, and the discussion then moves to material coherence and optical coherence and their control. He then discusses the differences between classical and quantal information techniques. The book closes with a discussion on the application probabilities of quantum technologies by examining the present and future applications of coherence.

This book is intended for upper‑level undergraduate and graduate physics and engineering students who are studying nonlinear optics, light–matter interaction, and quantum information; and industrial professionals who are involved in electronics and photonics. It will also be of interest to engineers who are involved in quantum information and quantum networks.

Takayoshi Kobayashi is a professor emeritus at the University of Tokyo, from which he graduated with bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees. He joined the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (Riken), and from 1977 to 1979, he was a temporary member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. In 1980, he joined the Department of Physics at the University of Tokyo as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1994. In March 2006, he retired from the university and moved to the Department of Applied Physics and Chemistry at the University of Electro‑Communications in Tokyo. He was then appointed as Chair Professor and Director of the National Chiao‑Tung University in 2006, which became the National Yang‑Ming Chiao‑Tung University in 2021. His research interests include quantum electronics, laser physics, femtosecond spectroscopy, ultrafast nonlinear optics, quantum optics, chemical physics, and quantum information science and technology.
